  • Veeco launches Lumina+ MOCVD system and secures its first multi-tool commercial order.
  • Rocket Lab to use Lumina+ for increased domestic compound semiconductor production.
  • Collaboration aligns with U.S. CHIPS and Science Act to expand semiconductor manufacturing.

Veeco Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ:VECO) announced the debut of its Lumina+ metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) system, alongside its first commercial multi-tool order from Rocket Lab Corporation (NASDAQ:RKLB). The order supports Rocket Lab’s initiative, under the U.S. Department of Commerce’s CHIPS and Science Act, to scale domestic production of compound semiconductor products.

The Lumina+ system integrates Veeco’s TurboDisc technology with improved efficiency capabilities tailored for high-volume manufacturing. The system addresses the arsenic/phosphorus (As/P) segment and represents a key step in Veeco’s semiconductor equipment offerings.

“The new Lumina+ system is a highly differentiated, game-changing production platform that enables cost-effective scaling for next-generation applications,” said Anil Vijayendran, Vice President of the MOCVD Product Line at Veeco. “We’re excited to offer the industry this new platform, combining our proven TurboDisc technology with breakthrough efficiency to set a new benchmark in compound semiconductor manufacturing.”

Rocket Lab to Expand Semiconductor and Solar Cell Capacity

Rocket Lab, known for its experience in producing space-grade solar cells and solar panels, will deploy the Lumina+ platform at its Albuquerque, New Mexico facility. The system will double the company’s production of solar cells and support the manufacture of domestically sourced compound semiconductors and electro-optical devices.

The Lumina+ platform provides the largest As/P batch size in the MOCVD sector, high throughput, and precise process uniformity and repeatability. These characteristics support Rocket Lab’s efforts to scale production efficiently.

Veeco and Rocket Lab have maintained a collaborative relationship for over 20 years, and the new system strengthens this ongoing partnership.

Lumina+ System Applications Across Industries

The Lumina+ system provides both scalability and precision for As/P epitaxy, helping manufacturers meet performance standards while lowering overall cost of ownership. It can be applied in multiple industries, including solar energy, automotive, consumer electronics, optical communications, and biotechnology.
