Unity Software Inc. (NYSE:U) reported second-quarter 2026 results on 6 August 2026, showing total revenue of $546.5 million, up 24% from $440.9 million a year earlier. The company's strategic revenue, which excludes businesses it has chosen to run down or sell, grew 38% to $486.4 million. Management attributed much of the momentum to Unity Vector AI, the machine-learning engine that matches advertisers with players across the Unity Ads Network.
Business and Sector
Unity supplies software used to build and run real-time interactive content, principally mobile games, alongside an advertising technology business that helps developers acquire and monetise players. It reports two strategic groupings. Create covers the development tools and services sold mainly by subscription, while Grow covers the advertising products that connect developers with advertisers. The company also reports a non-strategic category, which includes legacy activities being wound down or divested.
The sector is competitive: advertisers pay for user acquisition, and networks compete on data and prediction quality. Unity says Vector uses behavioural signals from the Unity runtime inside many games.
Latest Results
For the quarter ended 30 June 2026, strategic Grow revenue rose 63% to $329.0 million, while strategic Create revenue increased 5% to $157.5 million. Unity noted that Create growth would have been 14% excluding a $12 million one-time item in the prior-year quarter. Non-strategic revenue fell 33% to $60.1 million.
The GAAP net loss narrowed to $22.7 million from $107.4 million, equal to a loss of $0.05 per share against $0.26. Adjusted EBITDA reached $160.2 million, a 29% margin, compared with $90.5 million and 21% a year earlier. Free cash flow was $202.0 million, up from $126.7 million. Chief executive Matt Bromberg called it "arguably the best quarter in Unity's history as a public company."
Two portfolio actions also featured. The ironSource Ads Network was sunset with effect from 30 April 2026, and the Supersonic publishing business was sold on 4 August 2026.
Financial Performance and Industry Context
Unity ended June with cash, equivalents and restricted cash of $2,357 million, up $293 million from the end of 2025. Its balance sheet also carried convertible notes of $557.2 million classified as current and $1,680.2 million classified as long-term. The company said it expects to repay the 2021 convertible notes in November 2026.
For the third quarter, Unity guided to strategic revenue of $540 million to $550 million, with strategic Grow of $380 million to $385 million and strategic Create of $159 million to $163 million. It expects non-strategic revenue of about $20 million and adjusted EBITDA of $185 million to $190 million.
First-half revenue was $1,054.7 million, and the GAAP net loss of $369.6 million included a $278.7 million intangible asset impairment.
Risks and Uncertainties
Unity's growth is increasingly tied to one advertising engine, so any weakening in Vector's performance, advertiser budgets or access to player data would matter more than before. The Grow business competes with large platforms that hold their own data, and changes to mobile operating system privacy rules can alter targeting effectiveness.
The Create segment's growth is modest by comparison, and cloud and hosting revenue declined after the 2025 portfolio reset. Sunsetting ironSource and selling Supersonic reduce non-strategic revenue, so the reported total will depend on strategic growth continuing at pace. Unity expects GAAP profitability by the third quarter of 2026, a stated expectation.
Vector's test and the 2021 notes
Unity's second-quarter report shows a business in transition, with advertising-led strategic revenue growing quickly while legacy lines shrink. Readers may watch third-quarter results against the stated guidance, whether GAAP profitability is achieved as expected, the November repayment of the 2021 convertible notes, and evidence on whether Create growth firms. Further portfolio changes, and Vector's performance as privacy rules evolve, are also relevant.
