Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) edged lower on Friday, October 30, 2026, trading around $613 to $615 during the session. The Menlo Park, California-based owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp had no fresh news; the stock moved in sympathy with worries about AI Capital spending that swept through technology after Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s results.

Meta reported its third quarter the previous week, and the numbers left a mark. The company posted negative free cash flow for the first time since 2012, according to market data, as its spending outran the cash its Business generated. The stock has fallen over the past month, and Market data noted that Meta and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) are both well below their 52-week highs.

The AI-capex question

The concern is simple to state. Meta, Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) are spending enormous sums to build data centers and AI models, and investors are asking when that spending will pay off. "Together, Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta spent more than $200bn in the third quarter alone," a market analyst said. She added that "the risk is that higher financing costs will absorb more of the cash generated," a concern that applies across the group.

This week's reports intensified those worries. Alphabet reported third-quarter free cash flow of negative $9.1 billion against expectations of negative $3.5 billion, and capital spending of $51.4 billion. Its shares suffered their worst day ever on Thursday and fell again Friday. Amazon reported trailing 12-month free cash flow of negative $42.4 billion and signaled higher capital spending next year.

Microsoft offered a contrast, beating on Azure and posting a large cash-flow beat. "Microsoft's AI spending was rational and measured, and it has remained cash-flow positive," a market strategist said. Even so, its shares retreated Friday on plans to raise $25 billion in bonds, according to market data.

Search under pressure

There was another signal relevant to the online Advertising world. Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) plunged after its CEO warned that Google's AI search features are cutting referrals to the site. Steve Huffman said: "Web search is evolving from a gateway to the web to becoming an AI-powered destination itself." Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) also fell after missing estimates.

The broader market

Wall Street had its worst day since June. The Nasdaq Composite fell 747.73 points to 25,437.00, its worst session since June 5, and the Nasdaq-100 closed at 28,384.85. The S&P 500 dropped 140.32 points to 7,580.07 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 572.25 points to 51,770.31. The communication services sector, which includes Meta, was among the weakest groups and had its worst month since April 2022, according to market data. Over October, the Nasdaq-100 lost roughly $2 trillion in market value, according to market data.

A senior market analyst said: "strong AI Demand is no longer enough on its own."

What to watch

For Meta, the central question is when its heavy AI spending starts to show up in cash generation. Investors will be watching commentary from other large technology companies and any updates on Meta's Investment plans.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reports Monday, November 2, after the close, and Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) reports the same day. The midterm elections are Tuesday, November 3, and an investment manager said of a potential Democratic sweep: "I think that will be seen as negative for both the AI names". The October jobs report is due Friday, November 6.
