Optical Names Rebound on a Q3 Beat-and-Raise Report
MaxLinear (NASDAQ:MXL) shares are trading up 10.79% to $73.64 as optical and AI-connectivity names rebound and investors revisit the company's third-quarter beat-and-raise report. The chip sector also got a lift from Anthropic's IPO enthusiasm after the earlier post-earnings drop. Optical peers Credo (NASDAQ:CRDO), Astera Labs (NASDAQ:ALAB) and Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE) also rose.
Shares opened at $68.31, traded between $67.80 and $73.99 and are outpacing the broader tech sector. The stock dipped 2.79% in the session after the report, and its 52-week range runs from $12.77 to $128.30.
MaxLinear, a fabless semiconductor company based in Carlsbad, California and founded in 2003, designs RF, high-performance analog, digital and mixed-signal systems-on-chip for broadband access, connectivity, infrastructure and industrial markets. Its products include PAM4 DSPs for 400G, 800G and 1.6T optical data center interconnects, 4G and 5G wireless infrastructure and backhaul transceivers, storage accelerators, and broadband and Wi-Fi products. It is led by co-founder and CEO Kishore Seendripu.
Revenue Rises 72% and Infrastructure Sales Jump 210%
Third-quarter revenue was $218.1 million, up 29% sequentially and 72% from a year earlier, beating the $214.9 million estimate. Infrastructure revenue was about $125 million, up 210%, with broadband near $53 million, connectivity near $25 million and industrial and multi-market near $15 million.
Non-GAAP gross margin was 60%, non-GAAP operating margin was 29.5%, and non-GAAP EPS was $0.62 against the $0.56 estimate.
Q4 Guidance and a Higher Optical Outlook Top Expectations
Fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $240 million to $260 million topped the roughly $226 million consensus, with non-GAAP gross margin expected at 59% to 62%. The 2026 optical data center revenue outlook was raised to $250 million to $270 million.
Management cited backlog and bookings visibility into 2027 and 2028, with Keystone 800G ramping across multiple hyperscalers and first 1.6T Rushmore revenue expected in the first half of 2027. The company also plans to enter the 1.6T AEC market and expanded its revolver to $200 million.
Cash Use, Analyst Caution and Volatility Temper the Rally
Cash and equivalents were $109.9 million, and operating cash flow was negative $13.6 million because of wafer prepayments. Days of inventory fell to 111 from 123, and management says DSP supply is constrained by foundry capacity. MaxLinear has a market cap of $6.68 billion and EPS of $0.57.
Analysts sharply raised 2027 estimates, but the consensus rating is still Hold with a target near $94, and heavy CEO selling and a beta of 3.9 keep volatility a concern.
