Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) plunged on Friday, October 30, 2026, as investors looked past a strong third quarter and focused on what the company said about the months ahead. Reports differed on the size of the move, but the shares were among the worst performers on the NYSE Composite during a session already battered by a selloff in technology stocks.
The quarter itself was solid. Revenue came in at $895 million, ahead of analyst forecasts of roughly $875 million to $878 million, and Earnings Per Share of $1.40 topped estimates of $1.33 to $1.35. The problem was the outlook. Reddit guided fourth-quarter revenue to $1.00 billion to $1.03 billion, short of the $1.05 billion analysts had expected.
The user warning
The bigger shock was traffic. Chief Executive Steve Huffman warned that total daily active uniques could fall in the fourth quarter from 130.3 million, as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode cut the number of people arriving at Reddit through search. U.S. daily active uniques slipped from a year earlier to 50.7 million, and market reports said that the company also plans to require logins.
"Web search is evolving from a gateway to the web to becoming an AI-powered destination itself," Huffman said He added: "So we will likely be trading reach for engagement."
The downgrades
Wall Street reacted quickly. Market reports said that KeyBanc downgraded the stock to Sector Weight, while Market reports said a downgrade from Citizens. The two reports named different firms, and both downgrades may have taken place. Either way, the moves added a layer of analyst caution to a stock that was already being sold heavily after the results.
Other analysts struck a wait-and-see tone. A Jefferies (NYSE:JEF) analyst sees the shares possibly staying rangebound in the near term, according to market data. The combination of a revenue outlook below consensus and a warning about shrinking reach left analysts reassessing how quickly Reddit can grow while its search-driven traffic is under pressure.
A hostile market backdrop
Reddit's slide came on Wall Street's worst day since June. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points to 7,580.07, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 572.25 points to 51,770.31 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 747.73 points to 25,437.00. Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s cash-burn warning and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s negative trailing free Cash Flow drove a selloff in chip, AI and technology stocks, while energy and consumer staples rose.
Social-media peers also weakened. Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) fell again a day after its own earnings miss, and market reports said declines in Snap (NYSE:SNAP) and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META). Communication services was among the weaker sectors of the day.
"The message from investors is becoming clearer: strong AI Demand is no longer enough on its own," said a senior market analyst according to market data. For Reddit, the AI story cut the other way: the same search tools reshaping the web are now reshaping its traffic.
What to watch
The next question is whether Reddit's fourth-quarter user numbers land where management signaled, and whether the planned login requirement deepens engagement as Huffman described. Analysts will also watch how Google continues to roll out AI features in search, since referrals from Google have been a major source of new visitors.
More analyst reactions may follow the KeyBanc and Citizens moves. Beyond Reddit, the market faces Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)'s results on Monday, November 2, the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, and the October jobs report on Friday, November 6, all of which could shape appetite for Growth Stocks after a bruising week.
