Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) closed Friday at $361.54, up $1.40, a quiet gain that looked modest next to the rally in software stocks but marked a pause in the selling that had swept through AI hardware a day earlier. There was no company-specific news behind the move.
On Thursday, Broadcom had fallen sharply along with other chipmakers after a media report said that OpenAI's annualized Revenue was about $50 billion at the end of September. That was roughly $20 billion below a figure that had circulated in late September, and investors quickly questioned how fast the companies supplying AI infrastructure could keep growing if one of the industry's flagship customers was earning less than believed.
Why Broadcom is so sensitive to AI spending
Broadcom designs chips and sells infrastructure software. In recent years, the most closely watched part of its Business has been custom AI accelerators and high-speed networking chips built for the world's largest cloud and AI companies. That makes the stock a direct bet on how much those customers spend on data centers, and it explains why a report about OpenAI's revenue could move it so sharply.
Thursday's selling was broad. Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) and CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV) also slid, and the Nasdaq Composite closed sharply lower. Friday's recovery, however, was uneven. Software and Cybersecurity stocks rallied strongly, while the PHLX Semiconductor Index slipped. Nvidia fell $1.20 to $229.28 and AMD dropped $12.58 to $608.10. Against that backdrop, Broadcom's small gain left it among the steadier names in the chip group.
"Chips have been this year's story," Michael Monaghan, portfolio manager at Founder ETFs, said. For the week, though, semiconductor stocks were among the weakest corners of the market, while software ended well ahead. One weekly review said Leadership had moved out of the AI trade.
Reassurance, but not a full reversal
Some of Friday's calmer tone came from reports that OpenAI expects annualized revenue of $70 billion or more by the end of the year. That eased fears that the AI boom was stalling, but it did not erase the question raised on Thursday about how much revenue the build-out can generate.
Strategists have flagged that risk for some time. "The biggest systemic risk in the market next year is not France but 'something going wrong' in the AI ecosystem," said George Saravelos of Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB).
The wider market
The major indexes rose. The Nasdaq-100 gained 157.34 points to 30,883.15, the Nasdaq Composite added 172.83 points to 27,366.17 and the S&P 500 rose 46.18 points to 7,811.54, just below Tuesday's record close. The Dow added 423.31 points to 51,654.95.
Rates remained a headwind for richly valued growth stocks. The 10-year Treasury Yield held near a 24-year high, and the Fed, which raised rates in September for the first time since 2023, has signaled it may tighten again. Fed Governor Christopher Waller said Thursday he anticipates additional hikes to bring Inflation back to the Fed's goal. Consumer sentiment fell to a five-month low of 46.3 in the University of Michigan's preliminary October survey.
