KLA topped Wall Street's revenue and earnings forecasts and pointed to strong demand tied to the AI buildout, sending its shares higher in extended trading on Wednesday, October 28.
KLA Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) gave the chip-equipment trade one more reason to cheer. After the closing bell, the semiconductor inspection and process-control specialist reported quarterly revenue and earnings per share that beat analyst estimates and issued strong guidance, which it tied to demand from the artificial intelligence buildout.
A Beat Built on AI Spending
The stock climbed in extended trading, adding to a day when chipmakers and their suppliers had already been in demand. KLA sells the tools chipmakers use to inspect wafers and measure tiny features as they push to more advanced manufacturing processes.
When foundries and memory makers race to add capacity for AI accelerators and high-bandwidth memory, they need more of that equipment, and KLA's results reflected that pull. The quarter came in ahead of expectations on both the top and bottom lines, and the outlook was described as strong on the back of AI buildout demand.
Chip Stocks Were Already Rallying
The report landed in a supportive backdrop. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose to 11,684.00 on Wednesday, its fourth straight gain. Fellow equipment makers Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) and Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) both climbed solidly during the regular session, while memory names such as Micron (NASDAQ:MU) and Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) rallied after SK hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY) posted a record quarterly profit and said it sees the memory shortage lasting into 2030.
The broader AI infrastructure trade also had a strong day. Vertiv (NYSE:VRT) soared after raising its guidance, and Oracle (NYSE:ORCL) jumped after its investor day laid out a fiscal 2030 revenue target of $225 billion. The Nasdaq-100 rose 161.72 points to close at 29,813.16, outpacing the broader market.
Mixed Signals After the Bell
KLA's gain in extended trading came as megacap results sent conflicting signals about AI spending. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) rose after the bell as its Azure cloud business accelerated, while Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) slid after missing earnings estimates and raising its 2026 capital spending forecast to $195 billion to $205 billion.
Nasdaq-100 futures dipped overnight as Alphabet weighed, and Micron gave back ground after hours. Not everyone is convinced the spending boom lasts forever: BCA Research's Peter Berezin said he thinks the market is heading for an AI capex bust, though probably not until 2028.
What to Watch
The Federal Reserve also set the tone earlier in the day, leaving its benchmark rate range unchanged in a 10-2 vote, with long-dated Treasury yields climbing, a headwind for richly valued growth stocks.
Thursday's open will show whether KLA's after-hours gain holds once the full market weighs the results alongside Alphabet's slide. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) reports after the close, with Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Meta (NASDAQ:META) due later this week.
