Applied Digital (NASDAQ:APLD) was in focus on the Nasdaq Composite heading into Friday, October 9, after it reported results for its fiscal first quarter of 2027 that beat expectations. The company released the numbers after the close on Thursday, October 8, according to an Earnings roundup.
The headline takeaway was simply that the quarter came in ahead of what the market had been looking for. That alone was enough to draw interest, because the timing put Applied Digital's results squarely in the middle of a sharp debate over AI spending.
Applied Digital designs, builds and operates data centers aimed at high-performance computing and artificial-intelligence workloads. Its fortunes are closely tied to how much large AI developers and cloud providers are willing to spend on computing capacity.
Reporting into an AI scare
The results arrived on the same day AI-linked stocks were hit hard. On Thursday, a media report said that OpenAI's annualized revenue was about $50 billion at the end of September, roughly $20 billion below a figure that had circulated in late September. The report knocked AI infrastructure names, with CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV) and Oracle (NYSE:ORCL) among the hardest hit and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) falling to $230.48.
By Friday, sentiment had steadied. A separate media report said OpenAI expects to reach or exceed $70 billion by year-end, and software and cloud stocks rebounded strongly. Oracle, a major OpenAI infrastructure partner, rose $6.21 to $141.40, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) gained $12.46 to $535.07 and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) climbed $8.37 to $262.43.
Chipmakers lagged, though. Nvidia closed $1.20 lower at $229.28 and the PHLX Semiconductor index slipped, showing that investors were still picking carefully within the AI complex.
Signals from the wider AI Supply chain
Other data points this week underlined both the Demand and the risks. Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE) CEO Michael Hurlston said, "We are completely sold out, with no end in sight," as demand for optical components used in AI data centers outstripped supply.
On the other side, Nvidia-backed Australian data-center firm Firmus withdrew its planned initial public offering, which would have raised about A$7.1 billion, citing market Volatility and weak demand. Its board said "proceeding with the offer was not in the best interests of the company and its shareholders." Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB)'s George Saravelos also warned: "The biggest systemic risk in the market next year is not France but 'something going wrong' in the AI ecosystem".
The broader market
Friday's session was positive overall. The Nasdaq Composite rose 172.83 points to 27,366.17, the S&P 500 gained 46.18 points to 7,811.54, just below its record close, and the Dow added 423.31 points to 51,654.95. Tech sector funds pulled in $4.53 billion over the week, according to LSEG Lipper, even as broader US Equity funds saw outflows.
Higher rates remain a challenge for capital-intensive builders. The 10-year Treasury Yield held near a 24-year high, and the Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023.
Fuller Quarter Detail and the Next Big Tech Earnings Will Test the AI Trade for Applied Digital
US stocks trade on Monday, October 12, while the Bond Market is closed for Columbus Day, and the Fed meets on October 27 and 28. In the nearer term, September consumer prices arrive on Wednesday, October 14, and bank earnings run from October 13 to 16. Investors will want fuller detail on Applied Digital's quarter, including any updates on leasing and construction timelines. More broadly, the AI trade faces its next tests as big tech companies report later in the season.
