When a company is changing shape, analysts often value it piece by piece instead of using a single earnings multiple. That is the approach UBS took when it upgraded EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ:ECHO), a member of the S&P 500 since this year's March index rebalancing, on September 8, 2026. In a sum-of-the-parts valuation, each division or asset is valued separately and the results are added together, with debts and other obligations then deducted.
The SpaceX Stake Dominates the Math
UBS analyst John Hodulik raised his rating from Neutral to Buy and lifted his price target to $150 from $127, when shares traded near $89.80. The firm values EchoStar's expected stake of about 2% in SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) at roughly $39 billion, or about $110 per EchoStar share. It adds about $11 billion for remaining spectrum, $6 billion for pay-TV and Hughes, and about $2 billion for Boost Mobile, then subtracts debt, estimated taxes and tower obligations and applies a 20% discount to net asset value. EchoStar has said it holds rights to 261.8 million SpaceX shares, expected to close in November 2027, so the asset is a contractual entitlement rather than shares in hand today.
Offsetting Liabilities
The Hughes entities filed for Chapter 11 on August 3, 2026, after a $1.5 billion bond maturity. On the August call, management put wireless network termination and tax obligations at $5 billion to $7 billion and acknowledged a conglomerate discount. UBS also showed that if SpaceX reached its own $210 target, the stake would be worth about $55 billion, or $156 per EchoStar share, illustrating how sensitive the valuation is to one external stock. A market data quote of around $87.75 on October 14 would put EchoStar's market value near $25.5 billion.
A Story of Large, Uncertain Pieces
UBS's analysis shows how much of EchoStar's story depends on a handful of large, uncertain items: a SpaceX stake that does not close until late next year, spectrum proceeds, and liabilities running into billions of dollars. A sum-of-the-parts valuation can illustrate potential value, but it remains an analyst estimate rather than a forecast of where shares will trade.
