Coherent (NYSE:COHR) fell 11.34% on Friday as part of a broad sell-off in optical networking and AI hardware names. No company-specific news was identified for the day, and the decline reflects worries about AI Capital spending and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s weak outlook pressuring the technology Supply chain.
What Coherent Makes
Coherent makes lasers, optical networking components and engineered materials. A large and fast-growing part of its Business is optical transceivers and related parts that link servers and switches inside data centers, with Demand surging alongside the AI build-out. Because its biggest driver depends on the spending plans of a handful of cloud operators, the stock reacts sharply to any change in sentiment around AI investment.
The Demand Message Did Not Change
Market reports said Friday's move was driven by the sector sell-off rather than a company event, and that the stock had already fallen meaningfully over the past month. Chief executive Jim Anderson said in August the company continued "to see no signs of attenuation in customer demand," and nothing new from the company changed that on Friday. Investors were reassessing how much they will pay for AI-linked growth.
Pressure From Several Directions
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s third-quarter capital spending was about $77 billion with a trailing free cash outflow of about $42.4 billion, and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) lost more than $500 billion in market value on Thursday after much weaker-than-expected free cash flow. A market strategist summed up the mood by saying strong AI demand is no longer enough on its own. Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ:AAOI) and Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE) slid alongside Coherent. The S&P 500 fell 1.8% to 7,580.07 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.9% to 25,437.00.
Order Evidence Is the Test
Investors will look to Coherent's next Quarterly Report for evidence on whether Data Center orders remain strong, including transceiver shipments, capacity additions, margins and customer concentration.
