Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO) rallied on Friday, closing at $118.39 and ranking among the stronger members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The Blue-Chip index gained 423.31 points to 51,654.95. There was no company-specific news behind the move; instead, Cisco was swept up in a broad rebound across networking and software stocks.
Fellow networking name Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) also rose, and optical-component makers enjoyed a strong session after Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE)'s chief executive said Demand far outstrips supply. "We are completely sold out, with no end in sight," Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston said. Lumentum, Coherent (NYSE:COHR) and Corning (NYSE:GLW) were among the gainers.
Why networking is part of the AI story
Cisco is best known for the routers and switches that move data across corporate networks and the internet, but it also sells security software, collaboration tools such as Webex, and observability products. In recent years the company has pitched itself as a supplier for AI data centers, which require large amounts of high-speed networking equipment to connect thousands of processors.
That positioning tied Cisco to Thursday's turbulence. A media report said that OpenAI's annualized Revenue was about $50 billion at the end of September, about $20 billion below figures that had circulated earlier, sparking a sell-off across AI-linked stocks. On Friday, a separate media report said OpenAI expects to reach or exceed $70 billion by year-end, and investors returned to software and networking names.
A split within tech
The recovery was uneven. Software and Cybersecurity led, with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) up $12.46 to $535.07 and Oracle (NYSE:ORCL) up $6.21 to $141.40. Semiconductor stocks lagged: Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) slipped $1.20 to $229.28 and AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) fell $12.58 to $608.10. The PHLX Semiconductor index slipped on the day and posted a steep weekly loss.
Cisco's mix of hardware and software placed it closer to the winners than the chipmakers. Cisco also has a sizeable security business, and cybersecurity stocks were among the day's strongest groups. A market report tied that sector bid to Zscaler (NASDAQ:ZS) reaffirming its revenue outlook earlier in the week and announcing a collaboration with IBM (NYSE:IBM) and Red Hat.
The market around it
The S&P 500 rose 46.18 points to 7,811.54, about 7 points below its record close, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 172.83 points to 27,366.17. Nine of the 11 S&P 500 sectors rose, with real estate and health care in the lead and communication services the biggest laggard after SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX)'s spectrum deal hit telecom stocks.
Trading was light, with 14.37 billion shares changing hands against a 20-day average of 17.76 billion. Rates remain elevated, with the 10-year Treasury Yield near a 24-year high after the Federal Reserve raised rates in September for the first time since 2023. The Dow posted its biggest weekly gain since the week ended August 7.
Strategists remain divided on how durable the AI trade is. "Chips have been this year's story," Founder ETFs portfolio manager Michael Monaghan said. Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB)'s George Saravelos warned, "The biggest systemic risk in the market next year is not France but 'something going wrong' in the AI ecosystem."
