Asure Software (NASDAQ:ASUR) ranked second among Friday's US gainers, rising 31.81% after the Payroll and human-capital-management software provider posted third-quarter numbers ahead of expectations. The company reported on Thursday, October 29, and the stock kept climbing into Friday's session even as the broader market slid.
Revenue, Loss and Guidance Beat
According to market reports, third-quarter revenue was $40.02 million, up 10.4% from a year earlier and ahead of the consensus estimate of about $39.07 million. The company posted a GAAP loss of two cents per share, narrower than the nine-cent loss expected, and adjusted EBITDA came in at $10.47 million against an estimate of about $8.83 million. Operating Margin turned slightly positive, compared with a meaningful operating loss a year earlier, and free Cash Flow improved from the prior quarter.
Guidance was a second support. Asure guided to fourth-quarter revenue of about $43 million at the midpoint, ahead of the roughly $41.81 million analysts expected, and fourth-quarter EBITDA of about $11 million at the midpoint against a consensus near $10.39 million.
One Weak Metric
The report was not flawless. Billings of $39.2 million were roughly flat with a year earlier and missed expectations, growing more slowly than revenue. Investors evidently chose to focus on the revenue beat, the profitability improvement and the guidance instead.
A Small Company in a Weak Tape
Asure is a small company with a Market Value of roughly $208.8 million, and stocks of that size can move sharply when results surprise. It provides cloud-based payroll, tax-filing, time-tracking and HR tools for smaller businesses and has promoted its AsureWorks platform. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points, or 1.8%, to 7,580.07 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points, or 2.9%, to 25,437.00, as Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s weak outlook triggered a chip rout and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s results revived worries about AI spending. The Russell 2000 of smaller companies fell 1.7% to 2,811.84.
Follow-Through Is the Question
Investors will watch whether Asure delivers on its fourth-quarter guidance, whether billings growth catches up with revenue, and how small-business hiring holds up as rates stay high. Federal Reserve officials said rates may need to go higher, and futures priced a strong chance of a December hike, while US midterm elections on November 3 add another source of uncertainty. A large one-day jump in a small stock can also draw profit-taking.
