AppLovin (NASDAQ:APP) fell steeply on Friday, October 30, 2026, ranking among the S&P 500's sharpest decliners on a day when technology stocks were routed. There was no AppLovin-specific news behind the move. The Palo Alto, California-based company, whose software helps mobile app developers and advertisers reach and monetize users, moved with its sector ahead of its own quarterly report. Reports differed on the size of the decline, with an afternoon reading showing a smaller drop than the close.
AppLovin had plenty of company among software names. Datadog (NASDAQ:DDOG), which also had no company news and reports next week, was the S&P 500's worst decliner after Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), according to market data. Shopify (NASDAQ:SHOP), 8x8 (NASDAQ:EGHT), Elastic (NYSE:ESTC) and F5 (NASDAQ:FFIV) also fell, as did Cloudflare (NYSE:NET), Okta (NASDAQ:OKTA), MongoDB (NASDAQ:MDB) and Snowflake (NYSE:SNOW).
Why software sold off
The selling started in semiconductors. Intel's weak fourth-quarter guidance and cash-burn warning after Thursday's close sent its shares to their steepest one-day drop on record, according to market data. That fear spread through anything connected to the AI trade, including fast-growing software companies.
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s third-quarter results added to the strain. Trailing 12-month free Cash Flow was negative $42.4 billion, and the company signaled another increase in Capital spending next year. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) had already suffered its worst day ever on Thursday after negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion. Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) plunged after warning that Google's AI search features are cutting its traffic.
A senior market analyst said: "The message from investors is becoming clearer: strong AI Demand is no longer enough on its own."
There was a wrinkle in the day's story. Market reports said that software names were among the few gainers during the session, but the IGV software ETF finished lower, consistent with the broad decline AppLovin and its peers posted.
Index damage
The Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points to 25,437.00, its worst day since June 5, and the Nasdaq-100 closed at 28,384.85. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points to 7,580.07 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up 572.25 points to 51,770.31. Technology was the worst-performing S&P 500 sector, while energy, consumer staples, utilities and health care rose.
The damage was concentrated in big technology names. The equal-weight S&P 500 fell far less than the cap-weighted index, showing that megacaps, chipmakers and high-growth software did most of the damage.
A senior market strategist said: "The love-hate relationship with tech and AI continues, and investors are becoming more discerning following earnings."
Results on deck
The timing makes AppLovin's own report a focal point. It will follow a week in which several companies that beat estimates, including Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK), Reddit and Twilio, still saw their shares fall sharply. An Investment strategist said: "The Earnings bar is very high."
What to watch
AppLovin's upcoming quarterly report is the main event for the stock, and its guidance will be weighed against a backdrop of heavy selling in software. Datadog also reports next week.
Elsewhere, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) report Monday, November 2, the midterm elections are Tuesday, November 3, and the October jobs report is due Friday, November 6. Markets have priced in a December Fed rate hike, an important backdrop for growth stocks. St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said on Friday: "I judge that additional firming of Monetary Policy will be necessary, and soon."
