Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) fell again on Friday, October 30, 2026, a follow-through day after the worst one-day drop in its history. The Mountain View, California-based parent of Google lost ground for a second straight session, and a market headline said the week was the stock's worst since 2011.

Thursday's collapse wiped out nearly $500 billion of market value, according to market data. Friday's decline was much milder, but it extended the slide into a second day.

What spooked investors

Alphabet reported third-quarter results Wednesday night, October 28. Adjusted Earnings of $2.12 a share missed the consensus. Revenue came in at $127.6 billion against $128.2 billion expected, and search revenue was $63.4 billion, short of the $64.9 billion analysts were looking for. An $8.7 billion loss on Equity securities cut earnings by 55 cents a share.

The number that dominated the conversation was free cash flow: negative $9.1 billion, compared with expectations for negative $3.5 billion. Capital spending reached $51.4 billion, up $6.5 billion from the previous quarter, as Alphabet poured money into data centers and AI.

The wider AI reckoning

Alphabet's week set the tone for a broader reassessment of AI spending. On Friday, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) added to the pressure with trailing 12-month free Cash Flow of negative $42.4 billion and plans for higher capital spending next year, while Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s cash-burn warning set off a rout in chipmakers. Meta (NASDAQ:META) reported its first negative free cash flow quarter since 2012 the previous week.

"Together, Amazon, Google, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Meta spent more than $200bn in the third quarter alone," a market analyst said. A senior market analyst said: "strong AI Demand is no longer enough on its own."

Alphabet's search Business faced another reminder of how AI is reshaping the web. Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) plunged after CEO Steve Huffman warned that Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are cutting search referrals. Huffman said: "Web search is evolving from a gateway to the web to becoming an AI-powered destination itself."

Market damage

The Nasdaq Composite fell 747.73 points to 25,437.00 on Friday, its worst day since June 5, and the Nasdaq-100 closed at 28,384.85. The S&P 500 lost 140.32 points to 7,580.07, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 572.25 points to 51,770.31. Communication services, Alphabet's sector, was among the weakest and had its worst month since April 2022, according to market data. Market data noted that Alphabet and Meta are both well below their 52-week highs.

A senior market strategist said: "The love-hate relationship with tech and AI continues, and investors are becoming more discerning following earnings."

The pain was concentrated. The equal-weight S&P 500 fell far less than the cap-weighted index, a sign that megacaps like Alphabet carried much of the day's damage.

What to watch

For Alphabet, the key question is whether its heavy capital spending begins to translate into revenue and cash flow quickly enough to satisfy investors. Search revenue trends will be watched closely after the third-quarter shortfall.

The calendar is busy. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reports Monday, November 2, the midterm elections are Tuesday, November 3, and the October jobs report is due Friday, November 6. Markets have priced in a December Fed rate hike, keeping financing costs in focus for companies spending heavily on AI.
