For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Water Intelligence (LON:WATR). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing. View our latest analysis for Water Intelligence How Fast Is Water Intelligence Growing? As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Who among us would not applaud Water Intelligence's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 37%, compound, over the last three years? That sort of growth never lasts long, but like a shooting star it is well worth watching when it happens. I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While we note Water Intelligence's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 27% to US$32m. That's progress. You can take a look at the company's revenue and earnings growth trend, in the chart below. To see the actual numbers, click on the chart. AIM:WATR Income Statement June 19th 2020 Since Water Intelligence is no giant, with a market capitalization of UK£49m, so you should definitely check its cash and debtbefore getting too excited about its prospects. Are Water Intelligence Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders? It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that Water Intelligence insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. To be specific, they have US$13m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Those holdings account for over 26% of the company; visible skin in the game. Does Water Intelligence Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist? Water Intelligence's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So to my mind Water Intelligence is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Water Intelligence has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of. You can invest in any company you want.
