The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up. So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Bioventix (LON:BVXP). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. We can see that in the last three years Bioventix grew its EPS by 8.2% per year. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it. Bioventix maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 23% to UK£13m. That's encouraging news for the company! In the chart below, you can see how the company has grown earnings and revenue, over time. Are Bioventix Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders? It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. Bioventix followers will find comfort in knowing that insiders have a significant amount of capital that aligns their best interests with the wider shareholder group. Indeed, they hold UK£14m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. That amounts to 7.1% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders. While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. For companies with market capitalisations between UK£81m and UK£322m, like Bioventix, the median CEO pay is around UK£572k. Bioventix's CEO took home a total compensation package of UK£250k in the year prior to June 2022. First impressions seem to indicate a compensation policy that is favourable to shareholders. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense. Does Bioventix Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist? One positive for Bioventix is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see.
