Bob's Discount Furniture, Inc. (NYSE:BOBS) is drawing attention because its second-quarter 2026 results, published on 6 August 2026, showed a large gap between reported and adjusted profit, driven mainly by US$37.9 million of tariff refunds. The furniture retailer, which listed in the first half of 2026, also reaffirmed its full-year guidance and reported that it had fully repaid its term loan.
Reported profit versus adjusted profit
For the quarter ended 28 June 2026, net revenue was US$619.6 million, up 8.8% from US$569.5 million a year earlier. Comparable sales rose 2.3%, which management attributed to higher average order value and conversion, partly offset by lower in-store traffic. Net income was US$57.8 million, against US$35.2 million, and Diluted Earnings per Share were US$0.43, compared with US$0.31.
Adjusted figures told a different story. Adjusted net income was US$27.8 million, down from US$32.2 million, and adjusted diluted earnings per share were US$0.20, against US$0.29. Adjusted EBITDA was US$60.8 million, or 9.8% of revenue, compared with US$62.8 million, or 11.0%, a year before. Adjusted gross Margin was 45.4%, against 46.4%.
The company explained that the reported figure included US$37.9 million of refunds of tariffs levied under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, recognised in cost of sales. It also excluded US$10.7 million of accelerated Debt issuance costs from the term loan repayment and US$2.0 million of management fees linked to the termination of an advisory agreement with its controlling stockholder.
Tariff refunds and cash
In total, the company said it had approval for US$45.1 million of refunds in the quarter. Besides the US$37.9 million credited to cost of sales, US$5.7 million reduced the value of inventory on hand and US$1.5 million was booked as interest income. A receivable of US$41.9 million at quarter end was collected after the period closed.
Cash and equivalents were US$32.0 million at 28 June 2026, compared with US$53.2 million at 28 December 2025. Total Liquidity was US$176.6 million, including US$144.6 million of available borrowing. The term loan, which stood at US$338.2 million at the end of 2025, was fully repaid. First-quarter disclosures said the repayment used initial public offering proceeds, cash and revolving Credit borrowings, and that the credit Facility was amended on 29 April 2026 to raise maximum availability to US$200 million, with Maturity extended to April 2031.
Stores and outlook
Bob's operated 218 stores across 27 states at the end of the quarter, after opening four in the period. That compared with 214 stores in 26 states at the end of the first quarter, ended 29 March 2026, when revenue was US$578.1 million and comparable sales rose 1.2%. The company continues to plan about 20 new stores for fiscal 2026.
Guidance for fiscal 2026 was reaffirmed: net revenue of US$2,600 million to US$2,625 million, comparable sales growth of 1.5% to 2.5%, net income of US$152 million to US$160 million and adjusted EBITDA of US$255 million to US$265 million. Chief executive Bill Barton said the results demonstrated "the resilience of our Business model and strategy in a demanding retail environment".
Reported Gains, Softer Underlying Earnings
The adjusted numbers suggest underlying profitability was lower than the headline, and the tariff refund is a one-off benefit rather than a recurring source of earnings. The company's own risk language points to reliance on foreign suppliers, tariffs, Supply chain disruption, competition and pressure on discretionary spending. Lower store traffic was noted in both the first and second quarters.
Shareholders may watch the next quarterly report, the pace of store openings against the roughly 20 planned, and whether comparable sales stay within the guided range. No specific third-quarter guidance was given.
