Sonic Automotive, Inc. (NYSE:SAH) is in focus because its second-quarter 2026 results showed record gross profit and a large jump in reported profit, yet adjusted Earnings fell. Since then the company has announced a further luxury dealership Acquisition and analysts have trimmed price targets, so investors are looking closely at the quality of the earnings and where growth is coming from.
Second-quarter results
In its release of 30 July 2026, Sonic reported second-quarter total revenues of US$3.9 billion, up 8% year on year, and record gross profit of US$616.2 million, up 2%. Net Income was US$57.4 million, up 226%, or US$1.79 per diluted share. Adjusted net income was US$58.3 million, down 23%, and adjusted Diluted Earnings per Share were US$1.82, down 17%.
The gap between the reported and adjusted growth rates suggests the prior-year comparison was affected by items the company excluded, so the adjusted figures are the cleaner guide to underlying performance.
Three businesses, different trends
In franchised dealerships, same-store revenues rose 2% while gross profit fell 3%, although used vehicle unit Volume increased 7% and fixed operations delivered an all-time record quarterly gross profit. New vehicle inventory stood at 56 days' Supply and used at 35 days.
EchoPark, the used vehicle business, generated revenues of US$582.9 million, up 15%, and record gross profit of US$64.3 million, up 4%. Retail unit sales rose 17% to 19,601 vehicles, but segment income fell 38% to US$7.2 million, so growth in volume did not translate into higher profit.
Powersports posted record revenues of US$73.5 million, up 53%, and record gross profit of US$19.7 million, up 58%. Segment income was US$2.3 million against breakeven a year earlier. A later release said Sonic Powersports set another Sturgis motorcycle rally record, selling 1,135 motorcycles.
Luxury expansion and Capital returns
On 27 August 2026 Sonic announced it had acquired Porsche Walnut Creek in California, taking it to six Porsche dealerships. Chairman and chief executive David B. Smith said the Bay Area is one of the most important luxury automotive markets in the country and the deal reflects a commitment to expanding in premium markets. Financial terms were not disclosed. The dealership, which serves Walnut Creek, the East Bay and the wider San Francisco Bay Area, was previously operated by Fletcher Jones Automotive Group since 2006, and general manager Mike Pardini continues in the role.
The board approved a quarterly Dividend of US$0.41 per share, payable on 15 October 2026. The annual dividend is US$1.64, a Yield of 2.69%, an indicated rate based on the current quarterly payment, with an ex-dividend date of 15 September 2026. At quarter end Sonic had about US$294 million in cash and floor plan deposits and US$676 million of total available liquidity.
Earnings Quality and the October Report Are the Tests
The Market Capitalisation is about US$1.93 billion, with trailing twelve-month revenue of US$15.47 billion, net income of US$212 million and earnings of US$6.26 per share, giving a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 9.75. Several Brokers have recently cut their price targets. The forward price-to-earnings ratio is 8.62.
Risks include pressure on franchised gross profit, thinner EchoPark profits and the cyclical nature of vehicle demand. The next quarterly results are listed for 22 October 2026 and should show whether adjusted earnings stabilise.
