- Net income attributable to shareholders fell 12% to RMB27.2 billion even though operating profit rose 8%, mainly due to a roughly RMB7.4 billion other loss and higher taxes.
- The ADSs closed at $80.35 on Sep 22, down about 29% year to date; Q3 results are estimated for around Nov 18.
- PDD held RMB456.4 billion (about US$67.3 billion) in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments at June 30, 2026.
PDD Holdings (NASDAQ:PDD) grew revenue in the second quarter of 2026 but reported lower profit because gains in its core operations were more than offset by items below the operating line and by heavier spending to support merchants. In results released on August 24, 2026, the owner of China's Pinduoduo and the international marketplace Temu said total revenues rose 8% to RMB112.4 billion (US$16.6 billion), while Net Income attributable to ordinary shareholders fell 12% to RMB27.2 billion (US$4.0 billion) from RMB30.8 billion a year earlier.
The decline was not caused by weaker operations. Operating profit actually rose 8% to RMB27.8 billion, according to the release filed with the SEC. The drop came mainly from a net other loss of about RMB7.4 billion, compared with a small gain in the year-ago quarter, along with higher income tax expense. Those items outweighed a rise in interest and Investment income to RMB13.5 billion from RMB10.4 billion. The release did not provide a detailed explanation for the other loss.
Spending also rose faster than revenue. Total operating expenses grew 13% to RMB36.6 billion, which the company attributed mainly to higher sales and marketing costs. Management said PDD "stepped up" its ecosystem investments during the quarter, a signal that it is prepared to trade near-term profit for merchant and platform health.
Inside the Second-Quarter Numbers
Transaction services revenue, which includes Temu's sales and commission fees, rose 13% to RMB54.7 billion. Online marketing services revenue, which comes mainly from merchants Advertising on Pinduoduo, grew only about 3.5% to RMB57.6 billion, underscoring slower momentum in the domestic advertising business.
Cost of revenues rose to RMB48.0 billion from RMB45.9 billion. Within operating expenses, sales and marketing climbed to RMB29.7 billion from RMB27.2 billion, Research and Development rose to RMB4.6 billion from RMB3.6 billion, and general and administrative expenses increased to RMB2.3 billion from RMB1.5 billion. Non-GAAP operating profit rose 5% to RMB29.1 billion, while non-GAAP net income fell 13% to RMB28.5 billion.
Diluted Earnings per American depositary share were RMB18.45 (US$2.72), down from RMB20.75. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per ADS were RMB19.33 (US$2.85), compared with RMB22.07 a year earlier.
Cash generation remained strong. Operating Cash Flow rose to RMB25.7 billion from RMB21.6 billion, and cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments totaled RMB456.4 billion (about US$67.3 billion) at June 30. For the first half of 2026, revenue rose about 9% to RMB218.6 billion from RMB199.7 billion and operating profit increased to RMB47.3 billion from RMB41.9 billion, yet net income fell to RMB39.7 billion from RMB45.5 billion. That gap between operating progress and bottom-line results is at the heart of the headline decline.
What Management Is Prioritizing
PDD's leaders framed the quarter around long-term investment rather than near-term earnings. Co-Chairman and Co-CEO Lei Chen said global trade and regulatory landscapes "have continued to evolve, creating significant challenges while also presenting new opportunities." Co-Chairman and Co-CEO Jiazhen Zhao said the company continued to strengthen ecosystem governance and rolled out "targeted trust and safety initiatives."
Jun Liu, vice president of finance, said the company's priority "is helping merchants thrive and strengthening the broader industry ecosystem." PDD has used similar language in recent quarters to explain fee relief and support for merchants on its domestic platform. The company does not provide quarterly financial guidance, which leaves investors to judge the pace of future investment from each report.
Market Reaction and Share Price
The market response was muted on the day but negative over the following weeks. PDD's American depositary shares opened at $90.95 on August 24, then closed at $87.07, down about 1.5% from the previous close. The shares closed at $80.35 on September 22, down about 29% year to date and near the lower end of a 52-week range of $71.94 to $139.41. At that price, PDD had a Market Value of about $114 billion and traded at roughly 8.7 times trailing earnings. The precise reasons for the post-earnings decline were not immediately clear.
Competitive Pressures at Home and Abroad
In China, Pinduoduo competes with Alibaba's (NYSE:BABA) Taobao and Tmall, JD.com (NASDAQ:JD) and short-video commerce platforms such as Douyin and Kuaishou for both shoppers and merchant marketing budgets. Chinese consumer Demand has been uneven, and rivals have spent heavily on subsidies and new services, which can pressure merchant advertising spend and push platforms to raise incentives.
Overseas, Temu competes with Shein, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and other low-price marketplaces. Its model has been affected by changes in trade policy, including tariffs and tighter rules on low-value cross-border parcels in major markets, which have forced adjustments to logistics and seller models. Chen's reference to evolving trade and regulatory landscapes points to these pressures.
Risks to Watch
- Margin pressure: Continued increases in sales and marketing and merchant support could keep profit growth below revenue growth.
- Non-operating volatility: The swing to a large other loss shows that reported profit can move sharply for reasons unrelated to operations.
- Trade and regulation: Tariffs, customs changes and consumer-protection or platform rules in the U.S., Europe and China could affect Temu and Pinduoduo.
- Domestic competition: Weak advertising growth suggests merchants are cautious and competition for their budgets is intense.
On the positive side, PDD holds a very large cash position, still generates strong operating cash flow and grew transaction services revenue at a double-digit rate. The mean one-year analyst price target stands at about $115, well above the current share price, though analyst targets can change quickly.
PDD's Path Into the Holiday Shopping Season
PDD's third-quarter results, expected around November 18, 2026, will be the next major test. Investors will look for signs that online marketing revenue is re-accelerating, whether operating expenses keep growing faster than sales and whether the non-operating losses recur. China's Singles Day shopping festival in November, U.S.-China trade talks, including a leaders' summit reportedly slated for this week, and any new rules on cross-border E-commerce parcels in the U.S. or Europe are also likely to shape sentiment.
