Five Below, Inc. (NASDAQ:FIVE) has drawn attention because its second-quarter results for fiscal 2026, released on 2 September 2026, beat analyst expectations, prompted a higher full-year outlook and came with a new US$600 million share repurchase authorisation. The discount retailer reported net sales of US$1.26 billion for the quarter ended 1 August 2026, with comparable sales up 14.1%.

What the quarter showed

According to the company's release, net sales rose 22.9% from US$1.03 billion a year earlier. Operating Income was US$275.4 million and Net Income US$221.4 million, compared with US$42.8 million in the prior-year quarter. Diluted Earnings per Share were US$3.99 on a GAAP basis, while adjusted diluted earnings per share were US$1.68.

The gap between those two earnings measures is large. Adjusted earnings per share of US$1.68 compared with a consensus estimate of about US$1.33, and net sales were ahead of an expected US$1.21 billion.

Over the 26 weeks ended 1 August 2026, net sales were US$2.55 billion, up 27.5%, with comparable sales up 18.3%. The second quarter was the fifth consecutive quarter of double-digit comparable-sales growth.

Raised guidance and store growth

Five Below lifted its fiscal 2026 net sales guidance to a range of US$5.63 billion to US$5.71 billion, from US$5.40 billion to US$5.48 billion previously. It now expects comparable sales growth of 10% to 12%, up from 6% to 8%. Adjusted diluted earnings per share guidance moved to US$9.83 to US$10.31 from US$8.65 to US$9.05, while GAAP diluted earnings per share guidance is US$12.10 to US$12.58.

Expansion continues. The retailer opened 52 net new stores in the quarter and 101 in the first half, ending the period with 2,022 stores across 46 states, an increase of 8.8% year on year. Management still plans about 150 net new stores in fiscal 2026 and Capital Expenditure of US$250 million to US$260 million.

Capital returns and management comment

During the quarter the company repurchased roughly 311,000 shares for about US$60 million. Its board approved a new US$600 million repurchase authorisation on 29 August 2026. Chief executive Winnie Park said in the release: "We are thrilled with our second quarter performance and the continued momentum of our customer-centric strategy."

The shares have a 52-week range of US$137.77 to US$263.88.

Why it matters and what could go wrong

For a retailer that sells low-priced goods to younger shoppers, double-digit comparable sales driven by traffic rather than higher ticket prices suggests the stores are drawing more visits.

There are risks. Comparable growth of this scale is hard to repeat, and the company's own third-quarter outlook already points to a slower pace, with comparable sales growth of 8% to 10%. The unexplained difference between GAAP and adjusted profit means investors need to examine the non-recurring items before judging earnings quality.

Momentum, a Buyback and a Slower Third-Quarter Pace

For the third quarter of fiscal 2026, Five Below guided to net sales of US$1.21 billion to US$1.23 billion, diluted earnings per share of US$1.01 to US$1.13 and about 40 net new stores. Investors will also watch how quickly the company uses the new US$600 million authorisation, and whether it delivers on the roughly 150 store openings planned for the year.
