Gold prices fell below $4,100 an ounce on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, as a stronger-than-expected US inflation report prompted markets to reassess the Federal Reserve's rate outlook. According to market data, the gold futures contract was quoted at $4,077.00 (USD), down $84.51, or 2.03%, from a previous level near $4,161.51. Earlier in the session, spot gold dropped 1.7% to $4,086.06 an ounce and US December futures fell 1.6% to $4,108.60, extending losses for a third straight session.
Inflation Surprise Resets Expectations
US inflation rose to 3.7% year on year in September, above forecasts of 3.6%, driven by higher energy prices. Monthly CPI increased 0.6%, its biggest gain in five months, after a 0.4% rise in August. Core inflation also exceeded expectations, reaching 2.6% annually and 0.3% monthly. Oil prices added to the pressure after an attack on the headquarters of Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil company.
Rate Hike Odds Climb
Markets now see around a 50% chance of the Fed holding rates steady at its October meeting, down from more than 78% before the report. The probability of a rate hike in December has risen to nearly 99%, from 88% previously. Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman said the central bank has time to wait and see how markets and the economy evolve after its September rate rise. Recent Fed communications had offered little indication of back-to-back hikes, but the larger-than-expected increase in core CPI has brought an October move back into focus.
Dollar and Yields Weigh
The US dollar index climbed 0.4%, making dollar-priced gold more expensive for holders of other currencies, while 10-year Treasury yields also rose. A metals trading director said the hotter inflation data makes a Fed rate increase more likely, which lifted the dollar and added pressure on gold. Although gold is typically seen as an inflation hedge, higher interest rates diminish the appeal of non-yielding bullion.
Longer-Term Supports Remain
One analyst said gold should again benefit over the longer term from continued central-bank buying and renewed concerns over US debt and its rising interest burden. Each gold futures contract covers 100 troy ounces of 0.995 fine gold, a nominal value of about $407,700 at the latest quote. For US producers such as Newmont (NYSE:NEM), current price realizations shape operating margins and capital spending plans.
Forecast and Month-Ago Context
Gold is down 4.94% over the past month and 3.06% over the past year, which implies prices of roughly $4,288.88 a month ago and $4,205.70 twelve months earlier. Market forecasts point to about $4,285.19 (USD) for the fourth quarter, which is $208.19, or roughly 5.11%, above the latest quote. That outlook depends heavily on the Fed's path, the dollar and Treasury yields.
Gold's Test of Rate Expectations
Gold now trades between two forces. Hotter inflation, a firmer dollar and higher yields are pushing prices lower, while central-bank buying and debt concerns offer longer-term support. The next inflation readings and Fed signals will decide which side prevails.
