Silver prices fell below $58 an ounce on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, hitting their lowest level since early August as stronger-than-expected US inflation prompted investors to reassess the Federal Reserve's interest-rate outlook. According to market data, silver futures were quoted at $55.639 (USD), down $3.531, or 5.97%, from a previous level near $59.170. Earlier in the session, spot silver fell 4.1% to $56.99 per ounce.
Inflation Data Shifts Policy Bets
US inflation climbed to 3.7% in September, above forecasts of 3.6%, driven by higher energy prices. Monthly CPI rose 0.6%, its largest increase in five months, and core inflation also exceeded expectations at 2.6% annually and 0.3% monthly. Markets now see around a 50% chance of the Fed holding rates steady in October, down from more than 78% before the report, while the probability of a December hike has risen to nearly 99%, from 88%.
Why Silver Fell Harder
Silver dropped 5.97% against 2.03% for gold futures, so the gold-silver ratio widened to about 73.3. Higher interest rates reduce the appeal of non-yielding metals, and the stronger-than-expected core CPI reading brought an October move back into consideration. Silver also carries an industrial side, which can amplify swings when growth and rate expectations shift.
Industrial Demand Backdrop
Silver demand is increasingly driven by next-generation n-type solar cell manufacturing and electrical contacts, alongside investment buying. Primary mine supply has limited ability to respond quickly to price changes, which has contributed to multi-year industrial deficits. Each COMEX silver contract covers 5,000 troy ounces of 0.999 fine silver, a nominal value of about $278,195 at the latest quote.
US Producers in Focus
Hecla Mining (NYSE:HL), which operates the Greens Creek mine in Alaska and the Lucky Friday mine in Idaho, and Coeur Mining (NYSE:CDE) are among the US producers exposed to the price swings. Current price realizations help determine their operating margins and capital spending plans.
Forecast and Month-Ago Context
Silver is down 12.65% over the past month but up 4.69% over the past year, implying prices of roughly $63.70 a month ago and $53.15 twelve months earlier. Market forecasts point to about $63.816 (USD) for the fourth quarter, which is $8.177, or roughly 14.70%, above the latest quote. That would require a recovery of most of the past month's decline.
Silver After the Sell-Off
Silver has erased a month of gains in a few sessions as rate hike odds climbed. Solar demand and supply constraints provide a longer-term floor, but the Fed's next move and the dollar will drive the near-term direction.
