Masco (NYSE:MAS) edged up on Wednesday, October 28, posting a small gain on the S&P 500 after its quarterly results showed earnings growth and ongoing shareholder returns.
The move was modest, but it stood out against a tough backdrop for housing-related stocks, several of which slid on disappointing outlooks the same day.
Earnings Growth
Masco reported higher earnings per share for the quarter, according to market reports, and continued to return capital to shareholders. For a company tied closely to home renovation spending in a high-rate environment, steady profit growth is a sign of resilience.
Investors appeared to reward that consistency. Shareholder returns, through dividends and share buybacks, also provide a cushion for the stock when the outlook for the housing market is uncertain.
What Masco Does
Masco makes branded products for home improvement and new construction. Its portfolio includes Delta and Hansgrohe faucets and showers, and Behr paint, which is sold through large home-improvement retailers.
Much of Masco's business comes from repair and remodeling rather than new home building, which can make its sales more stable. Still, demand for its products is sensitive to home sales, consumer confidence and borrowing costs, since homeowners often finance big renovation projects.
A Rough Day for Housing Peers
Other housing-linked names struggled. Lennox International (NYSE:LII) slid after its profit fell and it cut its 2026 earnings guidance sharply. Whirlpool (NYSE:WHR) slipped after Stifel downgraded the appliance maker to Sell with a $20 price target, citing weak demand for big-ticket home goods.
Borrowing costs were a recurring theme. Long-dated Treasury yields climbed on Wednesday, with the 10-year pushing past a key psychological threshold, and the average 30-year mortgage rate has risen over the past month. Against that backdrop, Masco's ability to grow earnings stood out.
What to Watch
The S&P 500 rose 21.38 points to 7,743.98, its third straight gain. Technology and energy led the market, while rate-sensitive utilities and real estate lagged.
The direction of interest rates will matter a great deal for Masco and other housing stocks. The advance third-quarter GDP estimate and September PCE inflation data arrive at 8:30 a.m. ET on Thursday. Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT), Mastercard (NYSE:MA) and Merck (NYSE:MRK) report before Thursday's open.
