FTAI Aviation (NASDAQ:FTAI) missed Revenue forecasts but beat on profit, reaffirmed its outlook and doubled its share repurchase authorization, and investors sent the stock soaring on Thursday.
Capital return steals the show
FTAI Aviation's third-quarter revenue fell short of Wall Street's forecast. By the end of Thursday, October 29, hardly anyone seemed to care.
The aircraft-engine leasing and maintenance company doubled its share repurchase authorization to $1.0 billion and launched a $500 million accelerated share repurchase, according to one report. An accelerated program means the company buys a large block of stock up front, quickly shrinking the number of shares outstanding.
The stock soared through the session. It traded around $180.50 shortly after the report, the same report said, and kept climbing to close with a much larger gain, according to another source. Reports differed on the exact size of the move, but all pointed sharply higher.
The quarter in numbers
Revenue came in at $977.7 million, below the $997.1 million analysts had expected, one report said. Profitability told a better story. Adjusted EBITDA reached $348.3 million, ahead of the $319 million consensus, while GAAP Earnings of $1.43 a share were in line with forecasts.
FTAI also reaffirmed its EBITDA guidance for both 2026 and 2027. Holding a two-year outlook steady gave investors a degree of confidence about the path ahead, even after the revenue miss.
The CEO's message
Chief executive Joe Adams struck an upbeat note. "We have momentum across every part of the Business and clear visibility into 2027," he said, according to one report.
FTAI owns and leases commercial jet engines and aircraft, and it runs a maintenance business that repairs and overhauls engines, focused on widely used models that power narrow-body jets. Airlines rely on such services to keep aging fleets flying, particularly when new aircraft deliveries run behind schedule.
Profit over top line
The market's reaction showed how investors weighed the numbers. A revenue shortfall can be a warning sign, but investors seemed to view the EBITDA beat, the reaffirmed outlook and the larger buyback as more important.
Buybacks can lift Earnings Per Share by reducing the share count, and a doubled authorization can be read as a sign of confidence in the company's cash generation.
Rotation into the rest of the market
FTAI's rally came on a day when investors sold mega-cap technology and bought almost everything else. The Nasdaq Composite tumbled 365.13 points to 26,184.72 after Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)'s revenue miss revived concerns about artificial-intelligence spending. The S&P 500 slipped 23.59 points to 7,720.39.
But more than 400 S&P 500 members rose, the Russell 2000 climbed 28.71 points to 2,859.22, and industrial names tied to aerospace and defense were among the day's standouts.
"Money is rotating within the market rather than leaving it," one market strategist said, according to market commentary.
Lower oil prices on the day offered a small tailwind for aviation-related stocks. WTI settled at $102.00 a barrel, down 78 cents, as diplomatic efforts in the Middle East pressured crude.
What to watch
The first question is how quickly FTAI executes the $500 million accelerated repurchase and how much of the expanded authorization it deploys. Investors will also watch whether revenue catches up with the strong profit performance in coming quarters.
The reaffirmed 2026 and 2027 EBITDA guidance gives the market clear benchmarks to measure against. Broader factors matter too, including airline Demand for engine maintenance, jet fuel costs tied to an oil market sitting above $100 a barrel, and the Federal Reserve's December 8–9 meeting, where markets lean toward another rate increase.
