WF Holding (NASDAQ:WFF) delivered one of the most dramatic moves in the US market on Friday. The stock closed at $12.29, up $10.24 from Thursday's close of $2.05, after trading in an extraordinarily wide range of $1.75 to $19.44 during the session. Roughly 110 million shares changed hands, making it one of the most heavily traded small stocks of the day.

No company announcement explained the move. The shares gave back part of the gain after the closing bell, changing hands at about $9.99 in after-hours trading.

How big swings happen in tiny stocks

Before Friday, WF Holding was a micro-cap, with a Market Value well under $100 million based on its prior share price. Stocks of that size, with a low share price and a limited number of shares available to trade, can swing sharply in both directions when buying or selling picks up. A burst of Demand can push the price up quickly when few sellers are present, and the reverse can happen just as fast.

Friday's price path showed that Volatility clearly. The stock more than tripled from its prior close at points in the early afternoon, according to market data, before reaching its intraday high and then closing well below that peak. The after-hours decline added another reminder that such moves can reverse rapidly.

Without a company announcement, no disclosed development explains the new price.

Not alone among micro-caps

WF Holding was part of a wider pattern of large swings among low-priced Nasdaq stocks on Friday. OFA Group (NASDAQ:OFAL), Jianzhi Education Technology (NASDAQ:JZ) and Veea (NASDAQ:VEEA) also posted outsized gains. Veea's move followed a company statement that it is "fully compliant with Nasdaq's continued listing requirements", while no company announcement was found for the others. On the other side, several micro-caps fell sharply, including China SXT Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:SXTC), which reversed after a spike earlier in the week.

Such swings are common in this corner of the market and often have little to do with the broader economic picture.

The broader market

The larger market was calmer. The Nasdaq Composite rose 172.83 points to 27,366.17, the S&P 500 added 46.18 points to 7,811.54, about seven points below Tuesday's record close, and the Dow climbed 423.31 points to 51,654.95. The Cboe Volatility index eased to 14.84. On the Nasdaq, 2,756 issues advanced and 1,997 declined, while total Volume across US exchanges was below its recent average.

The day's main themes were a rebound in software stocks after Thursday's OpenAI Revenue scare, a selloff in wireless carriers after SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) agreed to buy spectrum for Starlink Mobile, and a rally in Vaccine makers on a report about a planned NIH cancer-vaccine initiative. The 10-year Treasury Yield held near a 24-year high, and the Fed, which raised rates in September for the first time since 2023, has signaled more hikes may follow.
