Universal Logistics Holdings (NASDAQ:ULH) was among the biggest gainers on US exchanges on Friday, rising 25.14% after the transportation and logistics company reported a third quarter that returned it to profitability. The results, released on Thursday, October 29, showed a sharp turnaround from the same period a year earlier.
From Loss to Profit
Universal reported third-quarter net income of $18.1 million, or $0.69 per share, compared with a net loss of $117.9 million, or $4.48 per share, a year earlier. The comparison is flattered by the prior year, when the company recorded $124.4 million of non-cash Impairment charges. Operating Revenue was $394.0 million, roughly level with the $396.8 million a year earlier, so the improvement came from cost control and better segment performance rather than top-line growth.
Contract logistics, the largest business, brought in $271.9 million, up 2.8%, with Operating Income of $22.9 million. Intermodal revenue fell to $53.1 million, but the segment swung to operating income of $2.7 million from a loss of $135.1 million. Trucking generated $69.0 million of revenue and $4.4 million of operating income. Chief executive Tim Phillips pointed to progress in the intermodal turnaround. Universal also declared a quarterly dividend of $0.105 per share, payable January 6, 2027, to holders of record on December 1, 2026.
Transport Names Stood Out
Freight names were well represented among the gainers, including FedEx Freight Holding (NYSE:FDXF) and Covenant Logistics Group (NASDAQ:CVLG), while regional airline SkyWest (NASDAQ:SKYW) fell after mixed results amid higher fuel costs. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points, or 1.8%, to 7,580.07 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points, or 2.9%, to 25,437.00, as Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s weak outlook triggered a chip rout and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s results revived worries about AI spending.
What Universal Does
Universal provides value-added contract logistics for manufacturers, particularly in the automotive industry, along with intermodal drayage and trucking. That mix ties its results to industrial production, retail volumes and North American Supply chains.
Intermodal Is the Key Watch
Investors will watch whether contract logistics keeps growing, whether intermodal profitability holds, and how the company handles higher fuel costs. Federal Reserve officials said rates may need to go higher, and futures priced a strong chance of a December hike, while US midterm elections on November 3 add another source of uncertainty.
