Swing to Profit Against an Impairment-Hit Comparison Sends Universal Logistics Higher
Universal Logistics Holdings (NASDAQ:ULH) shares are trading up 12.54% after the company reported third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday. Operating Income reached $32.8 million, compared with an operating loss of $117.4 million a year earlier, when a $124.4 million non-cash Impairment weighed on the numbers.
The company is a diversified transportation and logistics provider serving customers across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Its Business is split into contract logistics, intermodal and trucking, with contract logistics generating roughly 69% of quarterly revenue.
Revenue slipped about 0.7% to $394.0 million from $396.8 million, so the improvement came from margins rather than sales growth. The operating Margin was 8.3%, against an adjusted 1.8% in the prior-year period.
Intermodal Returns to Profit While Contract Logistics Margin Widens
Contract logistics Revenue rose 2.8% to $271.9 million, with operating income of $22.9 million compared with $13.7 million last year. The segment margin expanded to 8.4% from 5.2%, although active value-added programs eased to 76 from 82.
Intermodal posted operating income of $2.7 million after a $135.1 million loss a year earlier. Revenue in that segment fell 17.9% to $53.1 million, but it grew 20.4% from the prior quarter, and revenue per load excluding fuel rose 40.4% even as loads dropped 45.7%.
Trucking revenue edged up to $69.0 million from $67.7 million, and operating income rose to $4.4 million. Loads declined 9.6%, while revenue per load excluding fuel climbed 8.7%, which management linked to a better pricing environment.
Debt Reduction, a Smaller Revolver and a $0.105 Dividend Shape the Balance Sheet
Net debt stood at $678.1 million, down about $119.5 million from the end of 2025. The Credit agreement Leverage Ratio was 1.98 times, well inside the 3.50 times maximum, and cash totaled $15.3 million.
The company also amended its revolving credit facility, reducing commitments to $350.0 million from $500.0 million and extending Maturity to September 30, 2029. An uncommitted accordion allows up to $150.0 million of additional commitments, and roughly $90.1 million was unused at quarter-end.
Diluted Earnings were $0.69 per share, versus a loss of $4.48 a year ago. The board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.105 per share, with a Record Date of December 1, 2026. The release did not include formal forward guidance, and market Capitalization and a 52-week range were not part of the filing.
Whether Intermodal Progress and Debt Paydown Can Extend Beyond One Quarter
The 13% jump reflects a quarter in which profit, cash generation and leverage all moved in the right direction against a distorted prior-year base. Investors will likely focus on whether intermodal can hold its positive operating income, given the steep decline in loads, and whether trucking pricing gains persist. The next markers are the December 1 dividend record date, the January 6, 2027 payment, and the company's continued debt reduction efforts.
