Biohaven (NYSE:BHVN) soared on Thursday, October 22, 2026, ranking among the standout gainers on the Russell 2000 after the US Food and Drug Administration accepted its resubmitted new drug application for Vyglxia, also known as troriluzole, in spinocerebellar ataxia.
The stock jumped before the bell and held big gains through the session. According to market data, shares traded around $16.37 premarket, about $15.36 in mid-morning trade and about $14.55 in the early afternoon. Reports differed on the size of the move, but every figure showed a large gain.
Back on the regulatory track
According to a Biohaven filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission dated October 22, the FDA accepted the resubmission as a complete response to the complete response letter it issued on November 4, 2025. A complete response letter is the FDA's way of telling a company that it cannot approve an application in its current form, so acceptance of the resubmission puts Vyglxia back on the path to a decision.
The agency set a Prescription Drug User Fee Act goal date in the first quarter of 2027, with no specific day given. The PDUFA date is the target by which the FDA aims to complete its review.
Biohaven said the resubmission included "new positive supportive analyzes." The FDA also plans to convene its Peripheral and Central Nervous System Advisory Committee to discuss the application, with a meeting date to come "in the near term," according to the filing.
Why it matters
Spinocerebellar ataxia is a group of rare, inherited neurodegenerative disorders that damage the cerebellum and progressively impair balance, coordination and speech. Patients have few treatment options, which is why the fate of troriluzole matters both to the company and to the community it serves.
For investors, the acceptance removed some of the uncertainty that had hung over the stock since last year's rejection. An advisory committee meeting adds a fresh milestone: panels of outside experts vote on whether the data support approval, and while the FDA is not bound by their vote, the outcome is closely watched.
Biohaven's licensing deal with Ono, which dates to October 8, was background to the story rather than a fresh catalyst on Thursday.
Biotech rallied as tech slumped
Biohaven's surge came on a day when health care was one of the market's bright spots. The S&P 500 health care sector closed at a record high, even as Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) sank after trial data reportedly leaked ahead of its scheduled presentation. Investors rotated away from AI and chip stocks after the heavy spending plans from Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) and Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX)'s supply-constrained outlook.
The Nasdaq Composite tumbled 694 points to 26,008.86, its steepest drop since June 5, and the S&P 500 lost 93.74 points to 7,663.43, its worst day since July. Small caps held up far better, with the Russell 2000 edging up 3.01 points to 2,784.03 as falling Treasury yields helped rate-sensitive corners of the market.
The 10-year Treasury yield slid back below a closely watched threshold for the first time since September 22, a shift that tends to favor smaller companies and biotech developers that rely on outside funding.
Biohaven Awaits the Advisory Committee Date
The next milestone for Biohaven is the announcement of the advisory committee date, which the FDA said would come in the near term. After that, the panel's discussion and vote will set the tone heading into the first-quarter 2027 PDUFA goal date. Investors will also watch for any additional detail from the company on the new analyzes included in its resubmission, and for how the stock holds its gains after such a sharp one-day move.
