Twist Bioscience (NASDAQ:TWST) fell about 11% by late morning on Friday. No company-specific news was identified, and the decline lined up with a sharp drop in genomics bellwether Illumina (NASDAQ:ILMN) after its third-quarter results and a broad sell-off in technology and AI-linked Growth Stocks that sent the Nasdaq to its worst day since June.

What Twist Does

Twist manufactures synthetic DNA using a silicon-based platform that lets it write genetic material at scale. Its products include synthetic genes, oligonucleotide pools and tools for sequencing preparation, and it serves customers in drug discovery, academic research, agriculture and industrial biology. Over the past year the stock has also attracted interest for its role in AI-driven biology, so it now moves with sentiment toward AI as well as toward life-science tools.

Illumina Set the Tone

Illumina's third-quarter revenue of $1.129 billion fell short of estimates of about $1.15 billion, even though adjusted Earnings of $1.44 per share beat expectations and full-year revenue guidance was raised. Its shares fell about 18.6%. The results say nothing directly about Twist's business, but the two often share investors, and 10x Genomics (NASDAQ:TXG) fell sharply in the same session.

The AI Angle and Valuation

The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points, or 1.8%, to 7,580.07 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points, or 2.9%, to 25,437.00, as Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s weak outlook triggered a chip rout and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s results revived worries about AI spending. Market Analysis noted the stock had more than quadrupled over the past year and carried a forward sales multiple well above its five-year average, and that insiders had sold a sizable amount of stock over the prior 90 days, including October 2 sales described as covering tax withholding. In its last reported quarter, in early August, revenue rose to $118.38 million and topped estimates.

What Comes Next

Investors will look to Twist's fiscal fourth-quarter report for updates on revenue growth, gross margin, the path to profitability and the commercial progress of its AI-related collaborations. Until then the shares look set to move with genomics peers and AI-linked growth stocks.
