- Québec expands RAMQ coverage to include Dexcom CGM for adults with type 2 diabetes on IIT.
- Broader access supports improved glucose monitoring and diabetes management across the province.
- Dexcom G7 includes Apple Watch integration and predictive alerts for low glucose events.
Dexcom, Inc. (NASDAQ:DXCM) a global company specializing in continuous glucose monitoring technology, announced that the Québec government has extended public health coverage for its CGM systems under the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec. The update now includes eligible adults aged 18 and older with type 2 diabetes who are treated with intensive insulin therapy (IIT).
According to Diabète Québec, type 2 diabetes represents nearly 90% of all diabetes cases in the province, with many patients eventually requiring insulin therapy. The expanded RAMQ coverage will make CGM technology available to a larger population who may not have previously qualified under earlier criteria.
Eligibility and Coverage Guidelines
Under RAMQ regulations, access to Dexcom CGM systems requires meeting defined eligibility criteria:
- For those under 18: must have type 1 diabetes.
- For those 18 and older: must be on intensive insulin therapy (three or more daily injections or use of an insulin pump) and meet at least one of the following:
- The A1C target remains unmet despite optimized treatment.
- Frequent hypoglycemia events in the past year despite adherence to care.
- Difficulty recognizing or reporting symptoms of hypoglycemia.
Private insurers in Québec are also required to offer coverage that is equivalent to or better than RAMQ. Most private insurance plans already include Dexcom CGM coverage for individuals on insulin, and some extend eligibility to anyone with diabetes.
Management Commentary
“This announcement represents a significant step forward for people managing diabetes in Québec and their healthcare providers, with broader access to Dexcom’s advanced CGM technology,” said André Côté, Vice President and General Manager of Dexcom Canada. “Dexcom G7 is the most accurate CGM System, and the #1 preferred CGM by Canadian endocrinologists. 88% of CGM users with type 2 diabetes reported it helped them better understand and adjust their lifestyle and the impact on their daily diabetes management was both meaningful and measurable.”
Dr. Yves Robitaille, Specialist in Internal Medicine and Medical Director at the Metabolic Medicine Center of Lanaudière, added: “In clinical practice, continuous glucose monitoring has significantly advanced our ability to personalize diabetes care. Offering patients a range of options ensures that treatment aligns with their specific health goals and circumstances.”
