AstraZeneca (NYSE:AZN) rose 7.15% on Friday after the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker reported nine-month and third-quarter 2026 results that morning, in a session in which pharmaceutical shares were among the few corners of the market to hold up.
The Results
According to the results release dated October 30, third-quarter revenue was $16,209 million, up 7% at constant exchange rates, and nine-month revenue reached $46,881 million. Core Earnings Per Share for the quarter were $2.79, against $2.60 expected, while reported earnings per share were $2.02. Growth was led by double-digit gains in oncology, respiratory and immunology, and rare disease.
Guidance and Pipeline
The company kept its full-year 2026 guidance unchanged, still expecting revenue to rise by a mid-to-high single-digit percentage at constant exchange rates and core earnings per share to rise by a low double-digit percentage. The company also reported 12 positive Phase III readouts in the first nine months and 47 approvals in major regions since its fourth-quarter 2025 results, including first approvals for four new medicines.
A Defensive Rotation
The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points, or 1.8%, to 7,580.07 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points, or 2.9%, to 25,437.00, as Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s weak outlook triggered a chip rout and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s results revived worries about AI spending. Investors favored defensive sectors including consumer staples, energy and pharma, and a large drugmaker beating on profit while sticking to its outlook fit that rotation. Regeneron (NASDAQ:REGN) was another healthcare standout after its own quarter. Health care rose 0.45% on the day.
Readouts and 2027 Framing
AstraZeneca is one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, with franchises in cancer, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disease, respiratory and immunology, vaccines and rare diseases. Investors will likely focus on upcoming clinical readouts and regulatory decisions, the trajectory of newer launches, US pricing policy and the company's framing of 2027 when it reports full-year results.
