Abbott (NYSE:ABT) shares are trading up 3.77% at $110.20, against a previous close of $106.20, after the company released late-breaking clinical data at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics conference in San Diego for two investigational cardiovascular devices. The stock is still below its 52-week high of $132.03.

Abbott, founded in 1888 and based in Abbott Park, Illinois, is a diversified healthcare company with about 115,000 employees. It operates in medical devices, diagnostics, nutritional products and established pharmaceuticals, and medical devices is its largest segment, spanning continuous glucose monitoring, electrophysiology, structural heart and vascular products.

SonicForce Meets Primary Endpoints

The TECTONIC CAD IVL IDE study enrolled 335 patients with severely calcified coronary artery disease across 40 U.S. sites to evaluate the investigational SonicForce Coronary Intravascular Lithotripsy System. The system uses acoustic pressure waves, similar to those used for kidney stones, to crack calcium before stenting.

The study met its primary safety endpoint, with a 30-day target lesion failure rate of 0.3%, and its primary effectiveness endpoint, with procedural success in 97% of patients. Major adverse cardiovascular events occurred in 0.3% of patients in the as-treated population, and remaining vessel blockage after stent delivery dropped below 50% for all patients assessed by the core laboratory.

In an imaging sub-study of 106 patients, optical coherence tomography identified calcium fractures after treatment and showed improved post-stent expansion. The catheter can deliver up to 160 pulses at two pulses per second. SonicForce is not approved by the FDA and is limited to investigational use.

Amulet 360 One-Year Results

One-year VERITAS data for the Amulet 360 left atrial appendage occluder were presented in a late-breaking session and published in JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions. Complete closure, defined as zero millimeters of leak, was achieved in 96.3% of patients evaluated with transesophageal echocardiography.

More than 98% of patients were free from ischemic stroke or systemic embolism through one year, more than 99% were free from pericardial effusion requiring intervention, and more than 98% were free from cardiovascular mortality. Major bleeding was not reported in 93.4% of patients. The pivotal study covers more than 450 patients at over 30 hospitals in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Amulet 360 adds a softer, more conformable lobe and an outer disc that provides a second sealing layer. It received CE Mark approval in August 2026 and remains investigational in the United States.

Portfolio Impact and What to Watch

Abbott says SonicForce approval would strengthen its coronary portfolio alongside its imaging, lesion preparation and stent technologies, while Amulet 360 sits within its atrial fibrillation franchise. A research firm recently downgraded the stock to Hold after Abbott trimmed its 2026 comparable sales growth outlook to about 6%, so the device data arrive at a time when investors are watching growth momentum.

Abbott's trailing Earnings Per Share are $5.21, with a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 18.88 and a Dividend Yield of 2.29%. The shares are outperforming a flat-to-softer healthcare sector and a firmer broad market helped by falling oil prices. In atrial fibrillation, Amulet 360 sits beside ablation tools including the TactiFlex Duo catheter, the Volt PFA system and the EnSite X mapping system, and procedures that combine left atrial appendage closure with ablation are being investigated in Europe.

The next milestones are regulatory filings and potential U.S. approval for both devices, and whether the data help offset the softer sales outlook.
