The October 19 Update
In an October 19 update, Chord said third quarter oil, gas and natural gas liquids volumes exceeded the high end of August guidance, capital spending was in line and favorable price realizations pushed adjusted free cash flow above expectations, according to Lou. The company repurchased USD 205 million at USD 135.74 in the quarter and a further USD 44.3 million in the fourth quarter to date at USD 142.32. The stock closed at USD 158.13 on October 23, up 5.08%, which is above those buyback prices. Analysts including UBS with a Buy rating and a USD 197 target lifted forecasts, and Stifel resumed coverage with a Buy rating and a USD 182 target, calling Chord a natural consolidator in the Williston Basin.
Oil Leverage and Returns
Chord is a Williston Basin oil producer, with second quarter oil of 165.4 thousand barrels per day within 286.4 thousand total, or about 58%, simple arithmetic on two company figures. Its 2026 guidance of about USD 3.0 billion of adjusted EBITDA and USD 1.3 billion of free cash flow assumed WTI at USD 75 and Henry Hub at USD 3.00 for the second half. WTI near USD 102 is about USD 27 above that assumption, simple arithmetic, which would favor cash flow if sustained. Chord said it expects to return 75% of free cash flow in the third quarter, up from 54% in the second.
Risks and Dates
Fourth quarter oil is guided lower, to 156.0 to 159.0 thousand barrels per day, after the third quarter peak, and lease operating costs were raised. Net debt of about USD 677 million is simple arithmetic on company cash and debt figures at September 30. A new chief executive adds transition risk, and a decline in crude would reduce free cash flow quickly. The base dividend is USD 1.30 per quarter. Truist raised to USD 195 from USD 180 and Morgan Stanley to USD 178 from USD 169, both with positive ratings, though Jefferies and Citi hold Hold and Neutral ratings at USD 150. Third quarter results on November 4, 2026 will give final numbers, since the October 19 figures are preliminary and unaudited.
Where Things Stand
Chord is targeting 75% of free cash flow returns because its oil volumes beat guidance and crude trades well above its USD 75 planning assumption, which answers the headline. Chord Energy (NASDAQ:CHRD) is among the most oil levered names in this group, and the new CEO inherits a flush balance sheet. The balance of evidence favors cash returns, with a lower fourth quarter outlook and oil price risk. The next catalyst is the November 4 report.
