Key Highlights
- The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 1.75% on October 28, 2026, with Micron up nearly 6% and Broadcom up more than 2% as chip stocks led the broader market higher.
- Twenty-two of the 30 members rose on the day, but Nvidia, AMD and Intel were indicated lower premarket on October 29, down 1%, 3.3% and 3.6%.
- The index level is reported at 11,674 in one recap and 11,684 in another, so the level is not relied on, and the 1.75% gain is the verified figure.
- The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) is a related US chip fund, but no price move for it was verified and its index differs from the Philadelphia gauge.
A Chip-Led Close on Fed Day
On October 28, 2026 the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 1.75%, as the S&P 500 gained 0.28% and the equal-weight S&P 500 slipped 0.04%. That pattern shows a narrow, chip-led advance. Micron rose nearly 6% and Broadcom more than 2%, and 22 of the index's 30 members finished higher. SK hynix's US-listed shares rose 13.3% on results the same day. For a tradable proxy, the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) covers US chip companies, but it is a different index from the Philadelphia gauge and no SOXX move was verified. The index level is quoted at 11,674 and 11,684, so only the figure is used. The advance was therefore concentrated in a few large names. The close therefore leaned on memory and networking.
Memory Pricing Is Driving the Trade
The reason for the lift is pricing. JPMorgan said DRAM prices rose almost 30% and NAND about 25% from the prior quarter, per a recap, and SK hynix reported operating profit of 83.33 trillion won on revenue of 104.62 trillion won. Memory makers such as Micron benefit when prices rise faster than costs. Broadcom, which designs custom AI chips and networking silicon, benefits from data center spending. The market is therefore treating memory and networking as the clearest beneficiaries of AI capital spending, while accelerator names are indicated lower this morning. Investors holding the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) may see a mixed picture because it holds both groups.
Risks and What to Watch
A narrow rally can reverse. Nasdaq-100 futures were down about 1.2% at 4:09 a.m. ET on October 29, 2026 after software names plunged, and Nvidia, AMD and Intel were indicated lower premarket, so the day starts with a split. Rates add pressure: the Fed held at 3.75% to 4.00%, a December hike is priced above 80% and the 10-year yield touched about 5.02% to 5.04%. Memory prices are cyclical. Watch the open at 9:30 a.m. ET, Amazon and Intel results after the close, and how the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) trades against the index. Each of these could reverse the leadership. Chip leadership has shifted before.
Where Things Stand
The index rose 1.75% because memory and networking names such as Micron and Broadcom were bought on strong pricing news, and 22 of 30 members gained. The advance was narrow, since the equal-weight S&P 500 slipped. Nvidia, AMD and Intel were indicated lower on October 29, so the leadership may rotate. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) is one tradable way to follow chips, though no move was verified. Watch the open and Amazon and Intel results after the close. Leadership may rotate quickly. Premarket indications are not closing prices.
