SNDL Earnings: Why Did a C$52 Million Impairment Overshadow Record Cash Flow?
SNDL (NASDAQ:SNDL) reported third-quarter results before the open on Tuesday, October 27, in Canadian dollars. Net revenue was C$238.0 million, down 2.5%, and gross profit fell 9.8% to C$57.9 million, a 24.3% margin versus a margin 2.0 points higher a year earlier.
The operating loss was C$48.3 million, including a C$52 million non-cash goodwill impairment in Cannabis Operations, versus an operating loss of C$11.1 million. Net loss was C$50.8 million versus C$13.3 million. Adjusted operating income was C$5.2 million, an improvement of C$14.8 million.
SNDL is a Calgary-based operator of liquor and cannabis retail stores that also holds cannabis investments. No numerical guidance was given.
SNDL Retail: How Did Liquor and Cannabis Stores Perform?
Liquor Retail revenue fell 3.3% to C$134.8 million, with same-store sales down 6.0% on persistent soft demand. Gross margin was a quarterly record of 27.0%, but operating income fell 8.4% on higher promotions and costs from new Wine and Beyond stores.
Cannabis Retail revenue rose 0.7% to a record C$85.6 million, which management called the expected inflection point. Same-store sales fell 3.8% on market contraction in Ontario and Alberta, while operating income rose 3.9% to C$5.2 million.
The company had 165 liquor and 193 cannabis retail locations as of October 26. An Ontario regulatory resolution, subject to final documentation and a C$200,000 penalty, is expected to let franchise growth resume.
SNDL Cannabis Operations: What Is the Strategic Review Weighing?
Cannabis Operations revenue dropped 27.7% to C$27.0 million, with a gross loss of C$1.6 million. About C$6 million of other impacts were largely inventory adjustments tied to exiting domestic dried flower and cost variances at Jeeter.
Management said the segment remained below expectations. It is cutting costs, including a workforce reduction of more than 30% at the Kelowna facility, with benefits expected from the fourth quarter. A strategic review covers options from asset divestitures to broader productivity initiatives.
The Investments segment earned C$7.9 million, including C$6.9 million from SunStream's equity-accounted holdings, mainly on a higher Parallel valuation. Parallel's restructuring closed on July 27, lifting SNDL's indirect stake to about 92% from about 67%.
SNDL Capital Allocation: What Does the Proposed Share Bid Signal?
Free cash flow of C$20.0 million included a C$10.6 million one-time benefit from unwinding a captive insurance arrangement. Cash fell C$50.7 million after C$60.8 million of U.S. investments and C$10.0 million of buybacks. Equity stood at C$1,007.2 million.
SNDL repurchased 5,431,300 shares at a weighted US$1.31 in the quarter, and 243,320,644 shares were outstanding on October 22. A proposed substantial issuer bid of up to C$50 million at no more than C$1.92 per share still needs board approval, and the current buyback program expires November 20.
