Key Highlights

  • Sierra Bancorp (NASDAQ:BSRR) reported third quarter EPS of USD 1.18 against a USD 0.91 estimate, a 29.96% beat, up from USD 0.72 a year earlier, on net income of USD 15.3 million and a market value of USD 548 million.
  • Tax-equivalent net interest margin widened to 3.91% from 3.78% a year earlier, and the quarter included a credit loss benefit of USD 2.0 million against a USD 3.7 million expense in the third quarter of 2025.
  • Gross loans fell to USD 2.43 billion, down 5% since December 31, 2025 as the mortgage warehouse shrank USD 158.0 million, while deposits rose 4% to USD 2.98 billion.
  • The bank repurchased USD 14.4 million of stock in the first nine months, and declared a USD 0.27 dividend per share payable November 9, 2026, with nonperforming loans at 0.38% of gross loans.

Quality of the Beat

Part of the beat came from items that may not repeat. A USD 2.5 million lumber-related agricultural loan was paid off, releasing a reserve held in full against it, which drove the USD 2.0 million credit loss benefit, a swing of USD 5.7 million against the USD 3.7 million expense a year earlier, simple arithmetic. A USD 1.1 million recovery of interest on another agricultural nonaccrual loan, a USD 0.2 million special FHLB dividend, and a lower 22.7% tax rate from a renewable energy investment also helped. Without these, EPS would have been lower, though still above the prior year at Sierra Bancorp (NASDAQ:BSRR). The credit line alone explains a large part of the gain from USD 0.72 a year earlier.

Management Rationale and Outlook

CEO Kevin McPhaill called it an incredible quarter with record-breaking results, citing record profits, solid core deposit growth and the highest quarterly gross loan production since 2020. He said the loan pipeline remains elevated, similar to the prior quarter, and that he is even more optimistic about future opportunities. Mortgage warehouse growth was temporarily paused for enhanced controls, which explains the loan decline. The release gave no numeric guidance, so the pipeline comment is the only forward signal investors have. Loan production was the highest since 2020 even as total loans shrank, which means paydowns and the warehouse drop outweighed new lending. Noninterest-bearing deposits were USD 1.06 billion, or 35.4% of the total, giving the bank a low-cost funding base, and uninsured deposits excluding public funds were about 26%.

Capital, Credit and Risks

Credit trends improved: classified loans fell to USD 27.0 million from USD 31.4 million, loans past due 30 to 89 days dropped to USD 2.5 million from USD 6.8 million, and the allowance was 0.89% of gross loans. Shares outstanding fell to 12.97 million from 13.48 million, a decline of about 3.8%, simple arithmetic. Risks include agricultural credit swings, a smaller loan book, the pause in warehouse lending, margin pressure from deposit costs, and the possibility that one-time gains flatter Sierra Bancorp (NASDAQ:BSRR) this quarter. Nine-month EPS was USD 2.90 against USD 2.15 a year earlier, and nine-month dividends were USD 0.79 per share, so shareholder returns are being supported by earnings at the moment.

Where Things Stand

The answer is that Sierra Bancorp (NASDAQ:BSRR) beat because record loan production, a wider margin and a USD 2.0 million credit loss benefit lifted earnings, though several one-time items helped. A fair reading is that core profitability improved, but USD 1.18 is not a clean run rate. The next catalysts are the November 9, 2026 dividend, the pace of warehouse lending after controls are enhanced, and fourth quarter results. Investors should read USD 1.18 as strong but flattered.
