The Quarter in Numbers
HBT Financial, an Illinois bank holding company, earned USD 31.4 million, up from USD 27.8 million in the second quarter and USD 19.8 million a year earlier. Adjusted EPS was also USD 0.86 against USD 0.78 and USD 0.65. Net interest income of USD 70.3 million was up 1.8% from the second quarter and 40.7% year over year, and loans rose from USD 3.40 billion to USD 4.78 billion, about 41%, simple arithmetic on two reported figures. Return on assets was 1.85%. Noninterest expense was USD 42.7 million, including USD 1.0 million of acquisition costs, and the efficiency ratio improved to 48.73% from 50.67%. Return on average equity was 16.17%, and noninterest income was USD 14.2 million.
Credit, Capital and Management View
The provision was a negative USD 0.6 million, nonperforming assets were USD 10.8 million, or 0.16% of assets, and the company booked net recoveries of USD 0.5 million. The allowance was 1.26% of loans, or 599% of nonperforming loans. Common equity tier 1 was 12.94%, and tangible book value per share was USD 17.34, down USD 0.26 on unrealized securities losses. CEO Lance Carter called the quarter very strong, attributing the margin gain to fixed-rate loans repricing higher and securities cash flows reinvested at higher rates, partly offset by higher funding costs and lower loan accretion, and said expenses were well controlled and that all regulatory capital ratios increased during the quarter.
Risks and Catalysts
Part of the beat came from items that will not repeat: the mortgage servicing rights gain and the USD 0.4 million excise tax refund. Tangible book value fell because of securities marks, which can move again with rates. The pending Tri-County Financial Group deal adds integration and approval risk, and HBT Financial (NASDAQ:HBT) is in a blackout on buybacks until the stockholder vote on October 29, 2026, with USD 14.0 million left on a USD 30.0 million program that expires January 1, 2027. The release did not mention a dividend. Investors should watch the vote, regulatory approvals, the margin and credit trends as the loan book grows.
Where Things Stand
The answer is that HBT beat because net interest income was 40.7% higher than a year earlier, the margin edged up to 4.35% and fee income got a lift from servicing rights and a tax refund, producing EPS of USD 0.86 against consensus of USD 0.79. Credit and capital are strong. Some of the upside will not repeat. HBT Financial (NASDAQ:HBT) now awaits the Tri-County vote. The next catalyst is the October 29, 2026 stockholder meeting. This is not investment advice.
