Thursday had been a mixed day. The S&P 500 closed at 7,720.39, and advancers led decliners on the New York Stock Exchange by 1.95 to 1, according to market data, even as Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) suffered its worst day ever and ServiceNow (NYSE:NOW) had its worst day on record. Volume was roughly normal, at 17.05 billion shares against a 20-day average of 17.09 billion.
The overnight shocks
The mood changed after Thursday's closing bell. Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) issued a fourth-quarter outlook that fell short and warned of cash burn this year, citing a weak PC market tied to higher memory prices, Manufacturing bottlenecks and a factory accident in Israel. Its shares plunged to $65.76 on Friday, in what market reports called the company's biggest one-day drop on record.
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) reported the same evening. Revenue of $201.9 billion and Earnings of $1.89 a share fell short of estimates, trailing 12-month free Cash Flow was negative $42.4 billion, and the company signaled another increase in Capital spending next year. Shares dropped sharply before the open and finished lower.
A crypto jolt
Binance was reportedly hacked for about $6.3 billion, the largest crypto heist on record. TRM Labs and Elliptic tied the theft to North Korea, and Binance blamed a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, according to market data. About $3 billion was frozen, and Binance pledged to cover losses, according to market data. Bitcoin slid to around $77,000, and Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN), Strategy and Robinhood (NASDAQ:HOOD) tumbled. The episode even drew a public exchange between Elon Musk and Changpeng Zhao, Binance's co-founder and former CEO. "Elon, have a lot of respect for you, but bad time to troll. Please stop," Zhao said.
Rates, oil and the result
The macro backdrop offered no relief. Traders see a December Fed hike as the likely outcome, according to CME FedWatch data cited by market data. On Friday, St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said, "I judge that additional firming of Monetary Policy will be necessary, and soon." U.S. crude rose $2.12 to $104.12 a barrel on tensions around Iran and reported tanker incidents in the Strait of Hormuz.
Put together, the selling was heavy. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points to 7,580.07, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points to 25,437.00 and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index sank to 10,688.80. New 52-week lows jumped to 448 from 230 on Thursday, according to market data.
What to watch
The VIX closed below 20 despite the turmoil, and stocks recovered part of their losses from the lows. Whether the gauge settles or climbs further may hinge on a heavy calendar: Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reports on Monday, November 2, the midterm elections take place on Tuesday, November 3, and the October jobs report is due on Friday, November 6.
"Global markets are ending an exceptionally busy week on a cautious note," a senior market analyst said. "The earnings bar is very high," an Investment strategist said, a reminder that the remaining reports of the season face a demanding audience.
