Waste Management (NYSE:WM): a defensive name with a reaffirmed outlook
Waste Management (NYSE:WM), the largest collector of household and commercial waste in North America and an owner of landfills, reports third quarter results after the market close on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, according to its announcement of Thursday, September 24, 2026. Its call follows at 10:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Consensus earnings are USD 2.18 per share. In its release of Tuesday, July 28, 2026, second quarter revenue rose 4.0% to USD 6.684 billion, adjusted earnings were USD 2.02 per share and the adjusted EBITDA margin was 30.9%. The adjusted margin range was raised to 31.0% to 31.2%. Results cannot be known in advance.
Collection contracts renew at higher prices, so price growth above cost inflation lifts the margin even when volumes are flat. Landfills are scarce and hard to permit, which supports pricing, and they feed renewable natural gas plants. Recycling commodity prices and diesel costs can move quarterly earnings, and industrial volumes follow the economy. The positive case is earnings above USD 2.18, a margin above 30.9% and the EBITDA range held or lifted. The negative case is a lower margin, free cash flow under the USD 3.75 billion floor or softer volumes. The first reaction falls on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the day of the call and the rate decision.
CECO Environmental (NASDAQ:CECO): Thermon and a record order book
CECO Environmental (NASDAQ:CECO), a supplier of air quality, fluid handling and thermal technology to industrial customers, reports before the open on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with consensus of USD 0.59 per share. In its release of Monday, August 10, 2026, it reported second-quarter revenue of USD 285.0 million, up from USD 185.4 million, orders of USD 798.5 million and adjusted EBITDA of USD 40.2 million. GAAP loss was USD 0.80 per share after USD 45.5 million of acquisition and integration expense. Guidance was raised to revenue of USD 1.300 billion to USD 1.375 billion and adjusted EBITDA of USD 200 million to USD 225 million.
The Thermon acquisition closed on Monday, June 1, 2026, so the third quarter is the first with three full months of the combined group. Backlog of USD 1,819.1 million gives visibility but converts to revenue only as projects progress. Total debt rose to USD 727.7 million from USD 212.4 million at year end, and the Federal Reserve raised rates on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The bull case is revenue and EBITDA tracking toward the raised ranges. The bear case is a margin miss, slower orders or integration costs that outrun synergies.
Mirion Technologies (NYSE:MIR): organic growth in nuclear detection
Mirion Technologies (NYSE:MIR) makes radiation detection and monitoring equipment for nuclear power, defence, medical and laboratory customers and reports after the close on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with consensus adjusted earnings of USD 0.12 per share. In the release of Tuesday, July 28, 2026, second-quarter revenue rose 19.7% to USD 266.8 million and adjusted EBITDA was USD 65.3 million. Management reaffirmed full-year revenue growth of 22.0% to 24.0% and adjusted earnings of USD 0.48 to USD 0.55 per share.
Acquisitions such as Paragon and Certrec flatter reported growth, and organic growth is guided to 5.0% to 7.0%. Orders reached USD 291 million including acquisitions, up 40%, and USD 229 million without them, up 10%. Demand from nuclear operators, supported by new reactor programmes and life extensions, underpins the backlog. The shares fell about 9.4% after the July report despite the reaffirmed outlook. The bull case is organic growth of 7% or more and a guidance raise. The bear case is organic growth below the range or softer orders, which could extend the fall.
Orion Group Holdings (NYSE:ORN): marine construction after a guidance cut
Orion Group Holdings (NYSE:ORN), a specialty contractor that builds and dredges in marine, coastal and concrete markets, reports after the close on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with consensus of USD 0.09 per share. A revenue consensus is not widely published. The report of Tuesday, July 28, 2026 showed a second-quarter loss and a reduction to the 2026 outlook, and the shares fell on the day. The full-year range is the reference point, and the call time has not been confirmed.
Revenue is recognised as work is performed on long contracts, so a delayed start, weather or a change order moves earnings between quarters even when backlog is unchanged. Margins depend on how bids were priced when steel, fuel and labour costs differed, and on how fully dredges and equipment are used. Federal funding for ports, waterways and coastal protection supports demand over several years, but awards rarely arrive on a predictable schedule. The bull case is at least USD 0.09 with a reaffirmed outlook, which could lift a thinly traded stock. The bear case is another miss or a second cut, which could send the shares to new lows.
Where Things Stand
The answer is that each must show that backlog and pricing convert into margin, and the weakest balance sheets and lowest trust carry the greatest reaction risk. Waste Management (NYSE:WM) needs an in-line quarter and a confirmed EBITDA outlook. CECO Environmental (NASDAQ:CECO) must show Thermon synergies against USD 727.7 million of debt. Mirion Technologies (NYSE:MIR) must show organic growth inside 5.0% to 7.0%, and Orion Group Holdings (NYSE:ORN) must rebuild confidence after July.
The next catalysts are the four releases on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the Waste Management call on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 and the Federal Reserve decision the same day. Consensus figures and guidance are estimates, not guarantees, and this is not investment advice.
