Electra Battery Materials Earnings: Did It Report on October 27, and What Do the Latest Filings Show?

Electra Battery Materials (NASDAQ:ELBM) had not published third-quarter results by Wednesday, October 28, so the most recent full financial picture comes from its second-quarter filings, prepared as at August 11. All figures below are in Canadian dollars unless noted. As screened, the third-quarter estimate was a loss of $0.03 per share, with no reported figure.

The company is building a cobalt sulfate refinery in Ontario and is positioned as a North American supplier of battery materials. Second-quarter net income was C$9.0 million, or C$0.09 per basic share, versus a loss of C$2.0 million, while six-month net income was C$37.2 million, or C$0.36, against a loss of C$14.7 million.

ELBM Net Income: How Much Came From Warrant Revaluation?

The swing to profit was non-operating. Fair value gains on U.S. warrants were C$15.2 million in the second quarter and C$48.5 million for six months. Operating expenses were C$4.0 million in the quarter, up from C$3.5 million, on higher share-based payments and investor relations costs, partly offset by lower salaries as some refinery costs are capitalized.

Six-month operating expenses were C$7.9 million versus C$7.2 million.

Refinery Funding and Liquidity: Is the Capital Plan Fully Covered?

Cash was C$35.9 million at June 30. Over six months, operations used C$7.8 million, investing used C$7.6 million, mainly refinery spending, and financing provided C$12.3 million from at-the-market share sales and a deferred government grant. The company raised about C$9.0 million net from share sales.

The term loan carried a value of C$42.6 million, matures in October 2028 and bears 8.99% interest in cash or 11.125% paid in kind. Total commitments were C$89.7 million. The minimum liquidity covenant fell to US$2 million from US$15 million after July financing amendments.

Aggregate support is about US$82 million, including a C$20 million Strategic Response Fund investment and a C$17.5 million Invest Ontario commitment. Commissioning and ramp-up costs were estimated at about US$15 million, and the filing says additional capital may be needed. It also flags a material uncertainty that may cast doubt on the ability to continue as a going concern.

Cobalt Refinery Timeline: What Milestones Come Next?

The refinery has a US$73 million budget to reach mechanical completion. Early commissioning of select utilities and circuits is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, mechanical completion for the second quarter of 2027, ramp-up for the third quarter of 2027 and commercial production for the fourth quarter of 2027. About C$46 million of construction packages had been awarded by June 30.

Initial capacity is about 5,120 tonnes per year. An LG Energy Solution agreement includes a firm commitment for about 60% of planned production through 2029, with an option to extend through 2032.
