Highlights

  • Meralco deploys Itron’s AMI network across 73,000 endpoints in Metro Manila.
  • The AMI rollout will enable near real-time communication and quicker outage detection.
  • Infrastructure will support distributed energy resources and smart grid applications.

Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ:ITRI) has announced a collaboration with Manila Electric Company, the Philippines’ largest electricity distribution utility, to implement its Advanced Metering Infrastructure solution with Intelligent Connectivity. The initial phase covers 73,000 endpoints in Metro Manila, with expansion planned in the coming years.
This deployment represents a major step in Meralco’s smart grid modernization initiative, aimed at improving operational efficiency and elevating service quality for more than eight million customers. The AMI system will enhance how the utility distributes, monitors, and manages electricity across its network.

Components of Itron AMI Solution

Itron’s AMI system forms part of its Grid Edge Intelligence portfolio and utilizes an open, IPv6-based network that integrates both Gen5 mesh and cellular connectivity. The network works seamlessly with multiple meter manufacturers and supports various smart city and grid-edge applications in addition to smart metering.

Key components include:

  • UtilityIQ® software: A centralized headend platform providing full visibility and management of field devices.
  • Access Points: Enable rapid, near real-time communication between endpoint devices and back-office systems.
  • Network Interface Cards (NICs): Meter-independent components ensuring stable and secure data transmission.
  • Relays: Extend network reach in remote or hard-to-access areas.
  • Micro Access Points: Deliver localized and scalable connectivity in isolated environments.

Benefits and Future Applications

Through Itron’s AMI deployment, Meralco gains two-way, near real-time communication between its field devices and central systems. This capability allows faster outage identification and resolution, minimizing downtime, and improving customer satisfaction.
The infrastructure also lays out the groundwork for future energy developments, including integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) like rooftop solar systems and electric vehicles, without requiring further network upgrades. Customers will benefit from greater visibility into their energy consumption, helping them manage their usage more effectively.

Management Statements

Meralco Executive Vice President and COO Ronnie L. Aperocho stated:
“This partnership marks the beginning of our AMI transformation. With Itron’s Gen5 solution, we are creating a smart grid that aligns with the country’s vision for a digital economy while strengthening Meralco’s commitment to customer experience. It will enhance billing accuracy, give customers deeper insights into their energy usage, and allow us to respond more quickly to outages. We are proud to lay the foundations for a smarter and more sustainable energy future for the Philippine power industry.”
