Centrus Energy Shares: Why Is the Stock Little Changed After an 11.15% Rise?
Centrus Energy (NYSEAMERICAN:LEU) shares are trading 0.45% lower at $108.93 on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, a pause after an 11.15% gain on Tuesday, October 27 to $109.42 from a close near $98.44. No company release dated October 27 or October 28 explains either move. The shares sit near the bottom of a 52-week closing range of $98.44 to $390.82.
Centrus supplies enriched uranium fuel and related services for nuclear reactors and is expanding its enrichment capacity, including high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). At about 19.95 million shares, the screen price implies a market value near $2.17 billion (calculated).
Short Interest at 29.7%: What Could a Crowded Short Mean for LEU?
Short-interest data for the settlement date of October 15, 2026 show 5,933,422 shares sold short, down 4,380 from September 30. That equals about 29.7% of the 19.95 million shares outstanding (calculated, and not a free-float measure). Days to cover were 6.79, compared with 8.08 on September 30 and 9.39 on August 31.
A short position of this size can amplify price swings. If sellers cover into good news, the buying can push the price up faster than usual, while continued short selling can add to declines. The position has held between 5.4 million and 5.9 million shares since mid-September. The next settlement date is October 30, with publication expected on November 10.
Westerman Acquisition: What Does Centrus Gain From a Centrifuge Supplier?
On October 19, 2026 Centrus announced the purchase of Westerman Holdings for about $116 million, paid with roughly $95 million in cash and $21 million in Class A shares. Westerman has long made centrifuge casings and other major components for Centrus. Founded in 1909, it has about 400 employees and four facilities in Ohio, Oklahoma and Wyoming.
Centrus expects the deal to add to adjusted earnings per share in the first year after closing, along with lower project costs from an integrated supply chain. The release does not state a closing date or Westerman's revenue.
Second-Quarter Results and HALEU Funding: Where Does the Backlog Risk Sit?
Second-quarter revenue was $176.1 million, GAAP net income was $16.8 million (down about 42%) and adjusted net income was $38.7 million. Full-year 2026 revenue guidance of $450 million to $500 million was maintained. Centrus signed a $900 million Department of Energy HALEU enrichment task order and offtake agreements with Oklo (NYSE:OKLO) and X-Energy, and expects its first Oak Ridge centrifuge to be complete by the end of 2026.
The risk lies in the department's proposed fiscal 2027 budget, which includes no further HALEU operation contract funding and puts about $0.8 billion of Technical Solutions backlog in question.
What to Watch Next: The November 5 Call and the Next Short Figure
Centrus will webcast its quarterly shareholder call on Thursday, November 5, 2026 at 8:30 a.m. ET. The October 30 short-interest figure follows on November 10, alongside the Westerman closing and the federal budget outcome for HALEU funding.
