The Nasdaq Composite closed at 25,437.00 on Friday, October 30, 2026, down 747.73 points from Thursday's finish of 26,184.72. According to market data, it was the index's largest one-day drop since June 5. The Nasdaq-100, which tracks the largest nonfinancial companies on the exchange, fared worse, closing at 28,384.85 after shedding roughly 1,018 points, and it was down even more steeply at its intraday low.
The rest of the market fell too, but less. The S&P 500 lost 140.32 points to 7,580.07, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 572.25 points to 51,770.31 and the Russell 2000 slipped 47.37 points to 2,811.84. Reports differed on the size of the Nasdaq's move, partly because some outlets cited the Nasdaq-100 rather than the Composite.
Chips led the way down
Semiconductors drove the decline. Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) plunged to $65.76 after warning on Thursday night of cash burn this year and issuing a fourth-quarter outlook that fell short. The company cited a weak PC market linked to higher memory prices, Manufacturing bottlenecks and a factory accident in Israel. Market reports called it Intel's biggest one-day drop on record.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index sank to 10,688.80 as the selling spread across the group. Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) fell to $204.64 and lost about $185 billion in market value, according to market data, while Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) dropped to $504.80. Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), Marvell (NASDAQ:MRVL), Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO), Micron (NASDAQ:MU), Arm (NASDAQ:ARM) and ASML (NASDAQ:ASML) also fell sharply, and Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) slid despite beating forecasts amid worries that memory prices are peaking.
Megacaps and software piled on
Big internet names added weight. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) finished lower after results showing trailing 12-month free Cash Flow of negative $42.4 billion, and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) slipped again a day after its worst session ever. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Meta (NASDAQ:META) also fell. Software was hit as well, with Datadog (NASDAQ:DDOG), AppLovin (NASDAQ:APP), Cloudflare (NYSE:NET) and Snowflake (NYSE:SNOW) among the decliners, and Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) plunged after warning about its daily users.
Crypto-linked stocks added to the pressure after Binance was reportedly hacked for about $6.3 billion. Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN), Strategy and Robinhood (NASDAQ:HOOD) all tumbled as Bitcoin slid to around $77,000, well below the roughly $86,000 it fetched earlier in the month.
"This could remain a significant headwind for the Nasdaq," a senior market analyst said. "A lot of them kind of got ahead of themselves. It's all Earnings based and right now, they're not producing," said a trading specialist according to market data.
A rough October
Friday capped a difficult month. The Composite ended October down about 1,424 points from its September 30 close of 26,861.06, its worst month since March 2025, according to market data, and the slide ended a two-month winning streak. It also fell 518.34 points for the week, its third straight weekly decline, according to market data. Even so, the index remains up 2,195.01 points for the year.
What to watch
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reports on Monday, November 2, and Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) reports the same evening, giving the Nasdaq two more tests of investor appetite for big tech and AI. The midterm elections follow on Tuesday, November 3, and the October jobs report arrives on Friday, November 6.
Fed policy remains a backdrop. Traders now see a December rate hike as the likely outcome after the Central Bank held steady this week. A senior market strategist said the tech decline "does not appear abnormal" compared with earlier bull-market pullbacks.
