The Breakeven Cushion
Brent crude changed hands near USD 114.51 (about USD 114) and West Texas Intermediate near USD 101.04 (about USD 100) on October 26, 2026. EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG) says its 2026 free cash flow is projected at about USD 8 billion using strip pricing and the guidance midpoint, with a West Texas Intermediate breakeven below USD 50 a barrel. Against USD 101.04, that is a cushion of more tha USD 51 a barrel, simple arithmetic on two published figures. That low breakeven is why the stock, at 12.73 times trailing earnings, is often described as a lower-risk way to own the oil-up theme.
Second-Quarter Execution
Adjusted EPS of USD 5.70 and adjusted operating cash flow of USD 8.29 a share were described as record-level results. Free cash flow was USD 2.8 billion, and year-end cash was USD 4.9 billion against net debt of USD 3 billion. About USD 1.8 billion went to shareholders: USD 540 million in dividends and USD 1.3 billion in buybacks. Capital spending stays at USD 6.5 billion. Delaware Basin well costs are below USD 710 per foot, and the Encino Utica synergy target of USD 150 million was exceeded early. Operationally, Eagle Ford direct well costs are below USD 525 per foot, a new Austin Chalk area in Lavaca County adds about 125 two-mile locations, and Dorado dry gas wells cost below USD 700 per foot with the Verde pipeline adding a USD 0.50 per thousand cubic feet netback uplift this year. Two United Arab Emirates exploration wells averaged more than 25,000 barrels of oil per well over their first 30 days.
Risks and What to Watch
CEO Ezra Yacob said disruptions to Middle Eastern supply have drawn down commercial and strategic reserves, which could support demand for inventory rebuilding, but he remains wary of volatility tied to the Iran conflict. His 2027 framework assumes low single-digit oil growth at USD 60 to 80 West Texas Intermediate, below today's price. A settlement could therefore pull prices toward the range the plan uses. A published calendar lists third-quarter results for November 5, 2026, after the close. EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG) also has international exploration in the United Arab Emirates, a new area of execution risk.
Where Things Stand
EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG) shows how low its break-even is by planning on a West Texas Intermediate cost below USD 50, so USD 101 oil produces large free cash flow and room for buybacks. The shares at 12.73 times trailing earnings are not demanding, but they have a lot of the oil rally behind them. The November 5 report should show whether USD 8 billion of 2026 free cash flow remains on track.
