Key Highlights

  • Johnson Controls (NYSE:JCI) reports before the open on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with consensus adjusted earnings of USD 1.58 per share against guidance of about USD 1.55 and a backlog of USD 21.0 billion.
  • Hubbell (NYSE:HUBB) reports the same morning against consensus of USD 5.75 per share and full-year guidance of USD 20.25 to USD 20.55, with a 23.9% adjusted operating margin as the debate.

  • The common theme is orders turning into margin: all three report on one morning, one day before the Federal Reserve decision on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, which bears on utility and construction spending.

Johnson Controls (NYSE:JCI): backlog and the fiscal 2027 outlook

Johnson Controls (NYSE:JCI), a supplier of building heating, cooling, security and fire systems, reports fiscal fourth-quarter results before the market opens on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Consensus adjusted earnings are USD 1.58 per share. In its release of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the company reported third-quarter sales of USD 6,614 million, up 9%, organic growth of 10% and adjusted earnings of USD 1.42 per share. It guided the fourth quarter to organic growth of 9% to 10%, operating leverage of 45% to 50% and adjusted earnings of about USD 1.55. Full-year guidance was raised to about USD 5.05 from about USD 4.85. Results cannot be known in advance.

Orders and backlog show what revenue will follow. Third-quarter organic orders rose 27% and backlog stood at USD 21.0 billion, up 32% organically, a figure linked to data centre demand for cooling. Operating leverage, the share of extra revenue that becomes profit, is guided a little below the previous figure of about 50%. Adjusted segment margins in the third quarter were 21.1% in the Americas, 14.3% in EMEA and 21.2% in Asia Pacific, and free cash flow conversion is guided near 100%.

The bull case is earnings above USD 1.58 and an initial fiscal 2027 outlook that extends the backlog into higher margins; the shares rose about 4% after the July release. The bear case is earnings only in line with guidance, slower orders against a 27% comparison or a cautious outlook, which would raise the question of whether data centre strength is already priced in.

Hubbell (NYSE:HUBB): grid hardware and margin delivery

Hubbell (NYSE:HUBB) makes electrical and utility products, from grid hardware to wiring devices, and reports before the open on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Consensus adjusted earnings are USD 5.75 per share in market data. In the second quarter, reported in the company release of July 2026, net sales rose 15.3% to USD 1,711.8 million, organic growth was 10.2% and adjusted earnings were USD 5.52 per share, up 12% from USD 4.93. The full-year outlook of USD 20.25 to USD 20.55 per share was raised, and management said first-half order trends gave visibility into the second half. Results cannot be known in advance.

The two segments grew at different speeds. Utility Solutions sales rose 10% to USD 1,025.8 million, with Grid Infrastructure up about 12% and Grid Automation up about 1%. Electrical Solutions sales rose 25% to USD 686.0 million, but its adjusted margin fell 130 basis points to 21.2%, so growth is arriving with a cost. Free cash flow conversion of about 90% of adjusted net income is guided for the year, and orders commentary from other electrical equipment makers reporting this season gives the sector read-across.

The bull case is earnings at or above USD 5.75 with organic growth near 10% and stable margins, which would support the raised range. The bear case is a margin miss from acquisition mix or cost inflation, softer Grid Automation sales or a narrowed range, which would likely weigh on a stock that slipped after the July report despite beating estimates.

Itron (NASDAQ:ITRI): smart meters and a higher bar

Itron (NASDAQ:ITRI) supplies smart meters, grid software and related services to electricity, gas and water utilities, and reports before the open on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Consensus adjusted earnings are USD 1.56 per share, the middle of the guided range of USD 1.50 to USD 1.60. In the quarter reported on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, revenue of USD 563 million fell 7% year on year, yet adjusted earnings of USD 1.59 per share beat expectations and the shares rose about 20% in published market data. Third-quarter revenue guidance is USD 590 million to USD 600 million. Results cannot be known in advance.

Utility orders often take years to deploy, so backlog converts into revenue as projects ship. Backlog was USD 4.4 billion in June, against USD 4.5 billion a year earlier, and adjusted gross margin improved by 460 basis points to 41.4%. Full-year guidance is revenue of USD 2.37 billion to USD 2.41 billion and earnings of USD 6.30 to USD 6.50 per share, raised in July without a margin target, so the timing of shipments is the practical swing factor.

The bull case is revenue at or above USD 600 million and margin near 41%. The bear case is revenue near USD 590 million or a trimmed range, which could cause a sharp pullback because expectations rose after July. Utility budget timing, tariff costs and project delays are the underlying risks, and the Federal Reserve decision follows a day later.

Where Things Stand

The answer is that the three need to show that order strength is converting into margin. Johnson Controls (NYSE:JCI) needs earnings above USD 1.58 and a fiscal 2027 outlook that keeps its USD 21.0 billion backlog moving. Hubbell (NYSE:HUBB) needs USD 5.75 with margins held in Electrical Solutions, and Itron (NASDAQ:ITRI) needs revenue inside USD 590 million to USD 600 million with a gross margin near 41%. Each stock moved on the July report, so a quarter in line with consensus may not be enough.

The next catalysts are the three releases before the open on Tuesday, October 27, 2026 and the Federal Reserve decision on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after the rate increase of Wednesday, September 16, 2026. Consensus figures and guidance are estimates, not guarantees, and this is not investment advice.
