Key Highlights
● Stellantis jumped during the regular session on strong results.
● Ford slipped after the bell despite beating on earnings.
● Carvana surged after its own report the same evening.
● Higher borrowing costs and fuel prices weigh on auto buyers.
Automakers delivered contrasting reactions, as Stellantis, the maker of Jeep, Ram and Peugeot vehicles, jumped during the regular session after its third-quarter results, while Ford Motor slipped in extended trading after its own report. Ford reported after the closing bell, so its move came after hours, separate from the regular-session action.
Stellantis' US-listed shares climbed sharply after the company reported third-quarter revenue ahead of expectations and confirmed its full-year guidance, making it one of the most actively traded stocks of the day.
Ford's Mixed Report
Ford's adjusted earnings beat estimates, but revenue came in slightly short, with the company narrowing its 2026 guidance and giving a flat outlook for 2027. Its CFO pointed to deliberate action to improve profitability and deliver consistent returns.
The shares dipped after hours, as investors appeared to focus on the flat 2027 outlook rather than the earnings beat, with Ford named alongside ServiceNow as one of the evening's decliners in a market video roundup.
Carvana Surges
Elsewhere in autos, online used-car retailer Carvana jumped in extended trading after reporting record revenue and net income, while O'Reilly Automotive, the auto-parts retailer, rose after hours after raising its revenue and comparable sales guidance.
Auto stocks face a challenging backdrop, with borrowing costs remaining high after the Fed's September hike and long-dated Treasury yields climbing, which can feed through to auto loan rates, while elevated fuel prices can also shift consumer demand toward smaller vehicles.
