EyePoint Rebound: Why Is a Collapsed Retinal Drug Developer Among the Most Active Penny Stocks?
EyePoint (NASDAQ:EYPT) shares are trading 7.93% higher at $0.39 on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, among the most heavily traded names under $5. No new company release is dated today. The move follows one of the sharpest single-day drops on record for a Nasdaq-listed drug developer, which took the shares from $2.99 to roughly $0.44 on Monday, October 19.
EyePoint develops treatments for serious retinal diseases using Durasert E, a bioerodible insert that releases medicine inside the eye. Its main candidate, DURAVYU, pairs the insert with vorolanib for wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME).
About 184 million shares changed hands on October 19, against roughly 2.8 million on October 16. At about 86.2 million shares outstanding, today's price implies a market capitalization near $33.6 million (calculated).
LUCIA Results: How Did the Second Pivotal Trial Fall Short?
On October 19, EyePoint reported topline results from LUCIA, which enrolled 475 patients and compared DURAVYU 2.7 mg every 24 weeks with aflibercept 2 mg every eight weeks. DURAVYU did not show statistical non-inferiority on mean change in best-corrected visual acuity, although vision did improve.
Key secondary endpoints were met. Treatment burden fell 38% versus the control regimen, and at Week 56, 52% of treated eyes needed no supplemental injections while 71% needed zero or one.
The earlier LUGANO trial had also missed its primary endpoint in the full dataset. EyePoint will run further analyses of the pooled Phase 3 data before deciding next steps in wet AMD.
EyePoint Restructuring: Can About $118 Million in Cash Fund the Pivot to DME?
Alongside the trial results, the board approved a reduction of about 53% of employees, mostly in the fourth quarter of 2026 and finishing in the first half of 2027. Annualized savings are estimated at about $30 million, with about $9 million of one-time separation costs.
Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments were about $118 million at September 30, 2026. That equals roughly $1.37 per share on 86.2 million shares (calculated), compared with today's price of $0.39.
Development now centers on DME. The Phase 3 COMO and CAPRI trials are enrolling 551 patients, comparing DURAVYU 2.7 mg every six months with aflibercept every eight weeks on a non-inferiority visual acuity endpoint. Topline data are expected in the fourth quarter of 2027.
Analyst Cuts and Short Interest: How Much Pressure Remains on the Stock?
Research firms reset expectations after the readout, with one cutting its price target to $1 and another setting $4. The 52-week range runs from $0.36 to $19.11.
Short-interest data for the settlement date of October 15, 2026 show 21,260,757 shares sold short, up 472,517 from the prior period. That is about 24.7% of shares outstanding (calculated) and 8.07 days of average volume. High short interest can amplify rebounds when shorts cover, but it also reflects doubt about the business.
What to Watch Next: Next Earnings Report, Restructuring Charges and the DME Readout in Late 2027
The next earnings report is estimated for around November 9, 2026. The next dated clinical catalyst is the COMO and CAPRI topline data in the fourth quarter of 2027.
