Expand Energy Earnings: Did Third-Quarter Output and Profit Meet the Bar?
Expand Energy (NASDAQ:EXE) released third-quarter results after the market close on Tuesday, October 27. Adjusted diluted EPS was $1.46 against an estimate of $1.32 as screened, a gap of 10.78%, and GAAP diluted EPS was $2.24 on net income of $519 million. Adjusted net income was $338 million.
Production averaged 7.54 Bcfe/d, made up of 6.9 Bcf/d of gas, 17 MBbl/d of oil and 87 MBbl/d of natural gas liquids. The company ran 11 rigs on average, drilled 46 wells and turned 59 to sales.
Prices and Cash Flow: What Did Each Mcfe Earn?
Realized prices including derivatives were $2.94 per Mcf for gas, $75.97 per barrel for oil and $25.87 per barrel for liquids, or $3.17 per Mcfe overall. In the Haynesville, output was about 3,178 MMcf/d at $2.68 per Mcf, with $325 million of drilling and completion capital.
Adjusted EBITDAX was $1,229 million and operating cash flow was $1,177 million. After cash capital expenditures of $838 million, free cash flow was $339 million, or $354 million on an adjusted basis. Marketing adjusted EBITDA was $35 million.
2026 Guidance and Strategy: Why Did Capital Rise While the Production Range Narrowed?
Full-year production is now guided at 7.45 to 7.55 Bcfe/d, a narrower band than the 7.4 to 7.6 Bcfe/d reaffirmed in July. Capital investment is about $3 billion, above the $2.75 billion to $2.95 billion range given in July, with 11 to 12 rigs planned.
The release gave no separate fourth-quarter production, capex or EPS range. It did guide fourth-quarter marketing EBITDA of $80 million, reflecting the Twin Eagle acquisition that closed in September.
The chief executive said the company is positioned to benefit from gas market volatility and supply-premium markets, and to capture expected demand growth. Management pointed to returns-focused capital allocation, opportunistic buybacks and preserved balance sheet capacity. The release linked liquefied natural gas only to plans to take part in the global value chain.
Buybacks and What to Watch Next: Can Repurchases Keep Pace After Twin Eagle?
Expand repurchased $305 million of common stock in the quarter, with cash paid of $320 million. That brings year-to-date repurchases to about $900 million, roughly 4% of shares outstanding, and $1 billion of authorization remains. The quarterly base dividend is $0.575 per share, payable on December 3 to holders of record on November 12, and third-quarter cash dividends paid were $132 million.
Net debt was $4,656 million, or 0.8x adjusted EBITDAX. In July the company reported second-quarter adjusted EPS of $1.33 and about $530 million of buybacks, so the third-quarter adjusted profit rose while repurchases slowed to $305 million.
The earnings call is on Wednesday, October 28, at 9:00 a.m. EDT. Investors will look for detail on the capital increase to about $3 billion, the 2027 production path and the pace of repurchases against $1 billion of remaining authorization.
