Key Highlights
● Communication services had its worst month since April 2022.
● It was one of only two S&P 500 sectors to fall in October.
● Alphabet and Meta Platforms weigh heavily on it.
● Technology was the other sector to fall.
The communication services sector ended October 2026 with its worst month since April 2022, according to market data. It was one of only two sectors to fall during the month, alongside technology, while the other nine gained, according to market data.
The sector includes the largest internet Advertising platforms, led by Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), along with media, entertainment and telecommunications companies. Because Alphabet and Meta are so large, their moves dominate its performance.
Alphabet and Meta
The biggest blow came from Alphabet. The Google parent reported results on the night of Wednesday, October 28, with adjusted Earnings of $2.12 a share missing consensus. Search Revenue came in at $63.4 billion, below the $64.9 billion expected. Free Cash Flow was negative $9.1 billion, against expectations of negative $3.5 billion, as Capital spending rose to $51.4 billion, up $6.5 billion from the prior quarter.
On Thursday, October 29, Alphabet had its worst day ever, losing about $500 billion in market value. The shares slipped again on Friday. A market headline said it was Alphabet's worst week since 2011.
Meta reported the week before, around October 21-22, and showed its first negative quarterly free cash flow since 2012. The stock fell in sympathy with AI-spending worries on Friday and is well below its 52-week high, according to market data, as is Alphabet.
Together, the results crystallized a concern that ran through the month: that the cost of building AI infrastructure is consuming the cash these businesses generate. A market analyst said that "Together, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Google, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Meta spent more than $200bn in the third quarter alone."
Friday's damage
On Friday, October 30, 2026, Wall Street had its worst day since June. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points to 7,580.07, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 572.25 points to 51,770.31 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 747.73 points to 25,437.00. Communication services was among the worst-performing sectors on the day, behind technology and industrials.
Social media names had their own problems. Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) plunged after warning that daily active users could fall in the fourth quarter as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode cut search referrals. "Web search is evolving from a gateway to the web to becoming an AI-powered destination itself," said Steve Huffman, Reddit's CEO. Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) fell after missing estimates. T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS) US was a notable exception, rising on the day.
The contrast
The sector's slump stood in sharp contrast to the defensive groups. Energy, health care, utilities and consumer staples all posted strong gains in October, according to market data, and health care hit a record high on Friday, according to market data. The Dow rose about 864 points for the month, while the Nasdaq Composite fell about 1,424 points, its worst month since March 2025.
A senior market analyst said that "strong AI Demand is no longer enough on its own." A senior market strategist said that "investors are becoming more discerning following earnings."
What to watch
The midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, matter for the sector's biggest names. An Investment manager said of a possible Democratic sweep: "I think that will be seen as negative for both the AI names". The October jobs report follows on Friday, November 6. Investors will also watch the Federal Reserve's December meeting, where futures markets are pricing in a rate hike, and whether Alphabet and Meta signal any moderation in capital spending.
