Key Highlights
- CenterPoint Energy (NYSE:CNP) reports before the open on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with an 8:00 a.m. ET call, against consensus of USD 0.50 per share, after USD 0.40 non-GAAP in the second quarter and a USD 66.7 billion capital plan.
- FirstEnergy (NYSE:FE) reports after the close the same day against consensus of USD 0.90 per share, having reaffirmed 2026 core guidance of USD 2.62 to USD 2.82 and reported 6.4 GW of contracted data centre demand.
- CMS Energy (NYSE:CMS) reports before the open against consensus adjusted earnings of USD 1.35 per share, with 2026 guidance of USD 3.83 to USD 3.90 and 2027 guidance of USD 4.08 to USD 4.17.
- All three fund capital plans with debt, so the Federal Reserve decision on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 follows the September 16 increase to 3.75% to 4.00% and bears on financing costs.
CenterPoint Energy (NYSE:CNP): the setup after a reiterated outlook
CenterPoint Energy (NYSE:CNP), a regulated electricity and natural gas utility with operations in Texas and Indiana, reports third-quarter 2026 results before the open on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with the call at 8:00 a.m. ET. Consensus earnings of USD 0.50 per share in market data may be on a different basis from non-GAAP earnings, which were USD 0.40 in the second quarter against USD 0.29. The company reiterated 2026 non-GAAP guidance of USD 1.89 to USD 1.91 at no less than the midpoint, raised its 10-year capital plan by USD 1.2 billion to USD 66.7 billion without raising equity guidance, and completed the USD 2.62 billion sale of its Ohio gas business on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Results cannot be known in advance.
Texas load growth is the demand behind the plan. Batch Zero, the grid operator procedure for connecting large new loads, drew more than 17 GW of requests, with about 14 GW expected to be eligible by 2031. KeyCorp lowered its third-quarter estimate on Thursday, October 15, 2026, and TD Cowen initiated coverage with a USD 47.00 target. The bull case is a quarter at or above USD 0.50 and a second reiteration of guidance. The bear case is a weather or cost miss, rate recovery that lags investment or a delay in the grid operator process.
A regulated utility is valued on the visibility of earnings growth, so a clean reiteration after a Texas grid process update would carry more weight than a small beat. Higher interest costs matter too, because the Federal Reserve raised rates on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 and heavy spending is funded with debt.
FirstEnergy (NYSE:FE): data centre demand and a reaffirmed range
FirstEnergy (NYSE:FE), an electric utility holding company serving Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland and New York, reports third-quarter 2026 results after the close on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with the call at 9:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday, October 28. Consensus of USD 0.90 per share may be on a core basis rather than GAAP. Second-quarter core earnings were USD 0.50 against USD 0.52, in line with plan, and first-half core earnings were USD 1.22. The 2026 core range of USD 2.62 to USD 2.82 was reaffirmed with no third-quarter guidance, so USD 0.90 implies roughly USD 0.50 to USD 0.70 for the fourth quarter.
Contracted data centre demand is 6.4 GW, pipeline demand rose 30% since the first quarter and West Virginia demand rose 137% to 4.3 GW. The Energize365 programme is USD 36 billion over five years. The bull case is a quarter at or above USD 0.90, a range pointing to the midpoint of USD 2.72 or higher and firmer detail on connections. The bear case is a miss from storm costs or milder weather, an adverse ruling on the USD 52.8 million Potomac Edison Maryland request or hesitation on capital plan growth.
Interest costs are a standing risk after the Federal Reserve moved to 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
CMS Energy (NYSE:CMS): seasonal strength and the NorthStar exit
CMS Energy (NYSE:CMS), the parent of Consumers Energy, a Michigan electric and gas utility, reports on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with a presentation at 10:00 a.m. ET. Consensus adjusted earnings are USD 1.35 per share in market data. Second-quarter adjusted earnings were USD 0.37 against USD 0.71 a year earlier, and first-half adjusted earnings were USD 1.50, so the second half needs about USD 2.33 to USD 2.40 to reach the reaffirmed 2026 range of USD 3.83 to USD 3.90. Third-quarter earnings are normally the strongest of the year because of summer cooling. Results cannot be known in advance.
The July release introduced 2027 guidance of USD 4.08 to USD 4.17 and a long-term growth rate of 6% to 8%. NorthStar Clean Energy is exiting non-utility renewables development while keeping its Michigan assets. The bull case is adjusted earnings at or above USD 1.35 with the high end of the 2026 range still in view. The bear case is a weather-driven miss, an adverse ruling on the 20-year Energy Supply Plan filed on Thursday, September 3, 2026, or higher financing costs that push the company to adjust its equity needs.
The Federal Reserve decision on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 follows the CMS Energy release by hours, which makes commentary on financing costs relevant for the group as a whole.
Where Things Stand
The answer is that load growth only becomes earnings if regulators allow recovery of the capital it requires, and the three need to show that on Tuesday. CenterPoint Energy (NYSE:CNP) needs a quarter near USD 0.50 and evidence that the larger capital plan and Texas connections are on track. FirstEnergy (NYSE:FE) must hold a reaffirmed range against USD 0.90 and show data centre demand converting into regulated investment. CMS Energy (NYSE:CMS) is expected to report USD 1.35 in its strongest seasonal quarter, but the high end of its guidance and 2027 are likely to matter more than a few cents.
The next catalysts are the CenterPoint Energy and CMS Energy releases before the open and the FirstEnergy release after the close on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, then the Federal Reserve decision on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Estimates and guidance are not guarantees, and this is not investment advice.
